He received his Ph.D. at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in 1995 in immunology. In 1996, he received a Hitchings Elion Fellowship through the Burroughs Wellcome Fund to study protein engineering at the Center for Protein Engineering in the Laboratory for Molecular Biology in Cambridge, England. Perry returned to UAB in 1997 to complete an additional postdoctoral fellowship in structural biology and was appointed research faculty in Pharmacology in 2001. During 2001 and 2002, he was a visiting scientist at Eli Lilly and Company in Infectious Diseases Research, with primary responsibility for developing a bacteriophage display screening facility to support early stage drug development.
