Design & Manufacture of Advanced Components & Systems

Advances in material science, processing, sensing, and complexity theory are enabling revolutionary developments in engineered materials, components, and systems. Examples of research topics in this area include:

-Development of fibercomposite materials with nanoclays inserted in the matrix to enhance compressive strength

-Design of two-stage cure cycle for reducing thermal residual stresses in composite patch repairs for metal structures

- Design and fabrication of temperature telemeters that enable highly localized measurements for understanding the tribology of rotating machines

-Design of large scale, complex systems (e.g. aircraft, spacecraft) that exploit synergy with other systems/technologies in net-centric operations
