Description

The Purdue Center for Global Food Security and the Universidad Nacional de San Augustin (UNSA) Food Security team are hosting a forum entitled “Towards Sustainable Food Security” in Arequipa, Peru, from June 19-21, 2019.  The objective of this forum is to engage stakeholders in the identification of the current status of food and nutritional security in Arequipa and to discuss priority actions that an UNSA Center for Food Security might take to address important issues.

The forum is modeled after the Ending Global Hunger Colloquium, which was held at Purdue on April 10-11, 2019.  A team of three UNSA faculty participated in the colloquium, along with faculty and researchers from Purdue, partner universities, and other institutions around the globe. This event will be held in Arequipa and it will be organized into plenary and panel presentations on the mornings of June 19-20, along with breakout sessions during the afternoons.  On June 21, a field trip to smallholder communities in close proximity to Arequipa has been organized.

Overall, the forum will cover important topics related to food security, including nutrition and health, water and soil health, agricultural systems and food production, food security policies, climate change, agricultural technologies and markets.  The presenters and discussion leaders consist of international experts from Purdue and Peru.  Inaugural addresses will be made by distinguished guests from UNSA, Purdue, the Universidad Nacional del Centro del Peru (UNCP), and regional government dignitaries.
