Description

Dr. Jim Dooley and Dr. Hojae Yi will present a lunch seminar: Biomass Materials Handling Systems Design: Adding New and Improved Design and Simulation Tools to the Engineering Tool Kit

They will use examples from their project ranging from simple angle of repose and bulk density measurements to the true cubic triaxial testers to show the limits of existing methods. Dr. Dooley will discuss methods and devices being developed by Forest Concepts. Penn State is leading the adaption and improvement of biomass flowability models and simulations. Dr. Yi will discuss the flow modeling schemes they are working with to engineer bulk biomass handling systems and approaches to improve how well these models represent the characteristics and behavior of biomass feedstocks.

This project will contribute to the ultimate national goal of reducing risks and improving performance across the emerging biomass sector of the bioeconomy.

James H. (Jim) Dooley is co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Forest Concepts, LLC in Auburn, Washington. Dr. Dooley has built his career by combining a deep understanding of plant biology with disciplined engineering design and business development to create innovative products, processes and equipment. Dr. Dooley previously held a number of engineering, technical management and business development positions with Weyerhaeuser company in the timber industry, and with Amfac agricultural group in the sugar cane and tropical fruit industries. Dr. Dooley holds engineering degrees from Cal Poly, UC Davis, and the University of Washington. He is a registered professional engineer in Washington. He is the inventor of 32nd US patents and has published 14 peer reviewed papers and book chapters, plus more than 80 conference papers, an unusual accomplishment for someone in industry. Dr. Dooley was the President of the Institute of Biological Engineering (IBE) in 2000 and President of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers in 2007. He is a Fellow of IBE, ASABE, and AIMBE.

Hojae Yi is an Assistant Research Professor of the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering in the Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Yi’s researches focus on the mechanics of particulate materials with a special emphasis on the compaction and flow. Dr. Yi’s research interests include the characterization of physical and mechanical properties of particulate materials including biomass, agricultural products, and other industrial materials. His recent research topics include plant biomechanics using computational and experimental approaches.

Overview: Dr. Jim Dooley, Chief Technology Officer of Forest Concepts, LLC and Dr. Hojae Yi, Assistant Research Professor of Pennsylvania State University will present the seminar. Dr. Dooley is the PI of a recently awarded DOE project to expand and improve the engineer’s tool kit for designing biomass handling systems. They will provide an overview of their project and discuss how the properties and behavior of biomass materials are sufficiently different from soil, gravel, coal, and other granular materials that current characterization and engineering methods often result in handling systems that do not perform as intended.
