The Arequipa Nexus Institute for Food, Energy, Water and the Environment (Nexus Institute) will launch its first specialized workshop series at Purdue this August 1st to 9th. The Nexus Institute, housed in the Center for the Environment (C4E) in Purdue’s Discovery Park, is the flagship research and capacity building initiative of the cooperative alliance between Purdue University and the Universidad Nacional de San Agustin (UNSA) of Arequipa, Peru. Workshop modules are planned that cover a wide range of subjects including; metrics for soil health and vulnerability, social science assessment methodologies, applications of environmental sensors, visual analytics for earth sciences, remote sensing, high performance computing, stable isotope and nutrient analysis techniques, and field methods for soil and water samples. An interdisciplinary group of 24 UNSA faculty and research scholars will be part of the Peruvian delegation led by Dr. Henry Polanco, Dean of the College of Engineering at UNSA, and Co-Director, along with Dr. Timothy Filley -C4E, of the Nexus Institute. The mission of the Nexus is to build capacity and the strategic, long-term collaborations needed to address key environmental, agroeconomic, and social challenges that will support development of adaptive, profitable, and sustainable food-energy-water systems in the Arequipa region of Peru.
