SPECIAL ENERGY LECTURE: Biomass Monetization: The Gasifier Option

Energy Center
November 9, 2017
1:30 PM - 2:30 PM
MRGN 121

Description

Unitel Technologies is primarily involved in designing and constructing pilot and demo plants for companies engaged in the energy field.  One of the more promising opportunities has to do with applications that use biomass as the feedstock.  There are several pathways for monetizing biomass – enzymatic conversion, pyrolysis anaerobic fermentation and gasification.  While each one of these has its own pros and cons, there is a growing consensus that biomass gasification is the most viable option.  One of the more significant applications of biomass gasification has to do with the production of bioammonia.  This is an intriguing application from a holistic point of view because you can take waste feedstock from the farm and return it as ammonia back into the soil.

Dr. Ravi Randhava is President of Unitel Technologies, Inc. The company, based in Mt. Prospect, Illinois, is a small business at the leading edge of environmental and energy related applications. He leads research and process development activities, including those of its primary subcontractors. Dr. Randhava has been responsible for the successful implementation of over 900+ projects constructed for a wide range of customers and was instrumental in helping create what is now recognized to be the primary strength of the company – its extremely diversified international customer base. Dr. Randhava has over 40 years of experience in petroleum refining research systems (ranging from hydrotreating, hydrocracking, reforming, etc.), fuel cells, synthesis of molecular sieves, and polymerization, to name a few. He has authored more than 30 papers published in internationally recognized professional journals and his intellectual property portfolio covers a range of patents in fields as diverse as catalysis, new process technologies and new compositions of materials. His Ph.D. is in Chemical Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology.
