Your Guide to Residency Classification<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When a student is admitted to Purdue University, they’re classified as a resident, non-resident or international student. This is self-reported when applying and verified by the Office of the Registrar upon enrollment. Residency status determines your tuition rate at Purdue. Because we’re a public university supported by Indiana taxpayers, Indiana residents pay lower tuition than nonresident and foreign (international) students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even though tuition is paid to the Office of the Bursar, residency classification is managed here in the Registrar’s Office. If you have questions about your classification, email us at residency@purdue.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you believe your classification is incorrect or your situation has changed, you can apply to have your status changed to resident. Your current status remains in place until a reclassification is approved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Retroactive residency is rarely granted and only in cases of documented extenuating circumstances. Retroactive adjustments will not extend beyond one academic year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Understanding the Different Residency Types<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

At Purdue, your residency is classified as one of three options \u2014 resident, nonresident and foreign (international).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Resident is a student whose permanent address is in the state of Indiana<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Nonresident is a student who lives in the U.S. but outside of Indiana<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Foreign is a student whose permanent residence is located outside of the U.S.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
