This is self-reported when applying and verified by the Office of the Registrar upon enrollment. Residency status determines your tuition rate at Purdue. Because we’re a public university supported by Indiana taxpayers, Indiana residents pay lower tuition than nonresident and foreign (international) students.

Even though tuition is paid to the Office of the Bursar, residency classification is managed here in the Registrar’s Office. If you have questions about your classification, email us at residency@purdue.edu.

If you believe your classification is incorrect or your situation has changed, you can apply to have your status changed to resident. Your current status remains in place until a reclassification is approved.

Retroactive residency is rarely granted and only in cases of documented extenuating circumstances. Retroactive adjustments will not extend beyond one academic year.

Understanding the Different Residency Types

At Purdue, your residency is classified as one of three options — resident, nonresident and foreign (international).

Resident is a student whose permanent address is in the state of Indiana

Nonresident is a student who lives in the U.S. but outside of Indiana

Foreign is a student whose permanent residence is located outside of the U.S.

A Status of Nonresident or Foreign

You may initially receive a status as nonresident or foreign (international) for several reasons. If reclassification is approved, any eligible overpayment will be refunded.

How do I request a review of my nonresident status?

You must submit a Residency Reclassification application with all required documentation by 15 business days after the first day of classes for the term you’re requesting.

Why does Purdue have a residence policy?

As a public institution, the university receives funding from the State of Indiana. Residents pay less tuition because they or their families have contributed to this funding through state taxes.

If I live in a neighboring state, can I qualify for in‑state tuition?

It depends on which Purdue campus you attend. Purdue West Lafayette does not participate in reciprocity agreements with neighboring states.

Purdue Fort Wayne and some Purdue Polytechnic Statewide locations (New Albany and Richmond) do offer reciprocity agreements. For details, contact us at residency@purdue.edu.

What if I am an Indiana resident who went out of state for school?

Time spent out of state as a student doesn’t count against you, provided you return to Indiana within one year of your last enrollment or graduation and maintained your Indiana permanent residence while away.

If I’m enrolled as a nonresident student, will I always be considered a nonresident?

No. If you meet the requirements for establishing residency (including living in Indiana for an approved purpose) and apply by the deadline, you can request to be reclassified as a resident.

Can I apply for reclassification for a future semester?

No. Applications are reviewed only for the current term. Any retroactive approval will not extend beyond one academic year.

Is it possible to be a legal resident of Indiana but a nonresident student at Purdue?

Yes. Purdue’s definition of residency for tuition purposes differs from legal residency definitions used for voting, taxes or a driver’s license. Residency determinations made by other agencies are not recognized by the university.

Does paying Indiana taxes make me eligible for resident tuition?

No. Paying taxes alone doesn’t qualify you for resident tuition. Students whose primary purpose in Indiana is education are considered nonresidents for tuition purposes.

What if my parents are divorced, separated or never married?

A dependent student may qualify if one parent or legal guardian meets Indiana residency requirements and remains financially responsible.

I’m an international student who became a permanent resident.
