Celebrating Howard's Career

Purdue Recreation & Wellness: Howard Taylor's Retirement Party

On Friday, March 1st we celebrated the retirement of our Director, Howard Taylor. We had an amazing celebration at the CoRec, with nearly 150 friends, family, colleagues, and corporate partners in attendance.  The fact that individuals traveled from all over the country to attend is a true testament to Howard’s impact on so many staff and students throughout his more than 40 years in the field of campus recreation.  From Oregon to New Hampshire, to Texas, Maryland, and many places in between, those who admire and respect Howard descended onto the Purdue campus to honor their mentor, colleague, and friend.

We heard from family, friends, and colleagues during the event and some of the recurring themes mentioned were 'visionary,' 'leader,' 'caring,' and 'innovative.'  We also learned about one of his first lessons as a graduate student that taught him to always remember that campus recreation is about serving students and providing the opportunity for them to play, exercise, and have fun. Howard's first boss's words to live by... “Is It a Base? Is It Down? Play Ball!”

Howard also received a handful of exciting honors at the party. First, the RecWell Student Success Endowment has been renamed the Howard Taylor Endowment for Student Success. It is our hope to have this fund fully endowed by Purdue Day of Giving on April 25th, 2019 to be able to begin providing academic scholarships for our student employees by the Fall 2019 semester. Additionally, we are thrilled to announce that from this day forward the CoRec's Boilermaker Room will now be known as The Howard H. Taylor Conference Room.  A fitting tribute for a man who has served Purdue and its students with such heart.

For those of you wondering what his plans are – the final plans are still in the works!  However, he and his wife Mary will both be remaining on campus in part-time roles until June 30, so you are sure to see them around campus and working out at the CoRec. They are looking forward to spending more time with their 3 children and their families that include 5 grandchildren. We are excited to hear where their retirement journey takes them!

We Can't Thank You Enough, Howard

Check out the ways that the over 70 mentors, colleagues, friends, staff, and family of Howard thanked him for his many contributions to their careers and ultimately, lives.

The Howard Taylor Endowment for Student Success

Honoring the Legacy of a Legend

Howard's numerous contributions to Purdue, the campus recreation profession, and student development have impacted thousands. He is the true definition of a servant leader. He finds ways to empower and challenge those around him and his sheer joy for serving students is evident in all that he does.

For these reasons and many others, Purdue Recreation & Wellness is thrilled to announce the renaming of our Student Success Endowment to the Howard Taylor Endowment for Student Success. Once fully funded, the endowment will continue to support professional development for our student staff members and will be expanded to include academic scholarships for Recreation & Wellness student staff members for the first time.

We’re incredibly excited about this opportunity to honor Howard’s legacy while supporting our student staff members in a brand new way. We hope you’ll continue to partner with us as we embark upon the goal of endowing this fund to support generations of Boilermakers to come. Purdue Alumni Gather at NIRSA 2019

Purdue Recreation & Wellness: NIRSA Social 2019

On Monday, February 18th, over 30 current and former Purdue full-time and student staff members gathered at the Purdue Social hosted as a part of the National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) in Boston, Massachusetts. Each year over 2,000 campus recreation professionals gather at this conference for networking, professional development, and idea sharing. For the second time, the Purdue contingency gathered to reconnect and share stories. Former staff from the late 1990s and 2000s joined the likes of alumni that very recently graced the halls of the renovated and expanded CoRec. These individuals put their stamp on Purdue's facilities and programs before continuing their careers in campus recreation at other institutions across the country. Continue making the Purdue CoRec family proud, Boilers!
