2016 Symposium- September 28th & 29th

September 28 at 7:30 PM - September 29, 2016 at 5:00 PM

Polarization: A forum on extreme thought in our environment, society, and technology.

We live in an era in which ideologies often seem diametrically opposed and common ground is frequently elusive. Whether such apparent polarization is real or imagined is certainly open to debate, but our impression of polarization undoubtedly influences our mindsets and social discourse on scales ranging from the individual to the global. Environmental, social, and technological problems are especially liable to be viewed through a black-and-white lens, and the American political scene and social media are just two potential facilitators of such perspectives.

We have identified four subthemes as core focal areas:

  1. The Positives and Negatives of Polarization
  2. The Emergence and Dissolution of Radical Movements
  3. Polarization within Academia
  4. An Open Showcase for Extreme and/or Radical Ideas

This event is FREE and OPEN to the public thanks to our sponsors. This event is September 28th - 29th and organized by Purdue University’s Ecological Sciences and Engineering Interdisciplinary Graduate Program. To get involved, please contact ese@purdue.edu. We look forward to seeing you there!

Religious Studies & Arabic Program's Islamic Studies Lecture

September 29, 2016 | 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM

Loren D. Lybarger, Ohio University

“Secularism and the Religious Return Among Palestinians in Chicago: An Ethnographic Reflection on the Politics of ‘Islam’ in the Current Moment”

Thursday, September 29, Anniversary Drawing Room, PMU, 4:00 p.m.
Reception to follow

Sponsored by the Religious Studies Program, the Arabic Program in the School of Languages and Cultures, and made possible by the INNOVATE 2.0 Arabic Speakers Grant?

Abstract: Anti-Muslim racism has spiked during the current presidential campaign in the United States. Calls to ban Muslim immigrants have paralleled an increase in violent incidents directed at Muslims across the country. Teaching about Islam and Muslims in this political moment is, therefore, particularly urgent. In this lecture, Loren D. Lybarger, Associate Professor of Classics and World Religions at Ohio University (Athens), will discuss the need to complicate the prevailing public discourse about “Islam” by emphasizing the historical contingency and socio-cultural diversity of Muslim societies. Lybarger focuses specifically on secular-religious interactions in the Palestinian immigrant community in Chicago. Drawing on extensive ethnographic research, he shows how this interaction, which intersects as well with gender, class, and generation, generates diverging and unexpected understandings of Islam and national identity. This divergence raises fundamental questions about what “Islam” is and means in the context of one particular group’s historical experience. It is by raising such questions, Lybarger concludes, that scholars in Islamic Studies and its related areas of study can most effectively challenge the caricaturing of Muslims in public discourse.

Happy Hollow Elementary School Tour

September 30, 2016 | 9:00 AM - 2:00 PM

The importance of fostering interest in science and engineering at a young age cannot be overstated. Therefore the Purdue Alpha chapter is looking to organize and run an outreach program for approximately 250 fifth and sixth graders from Happy Hollow Elementary School. This event would supplement the students’ classroom learning with a series of tours and hands on demonstrations over various engineering fields.

While on campus, the students will be taken to a handful of selected events. They will tour the only nuclear reactor in the state of Indiana, explore a state of the art eco-friendly green roof, visit a virtual reality and data visualization lab, view a brand new scale model of the solar system, and watch a 3D printer demonstration.

While the student participate in these activities, the students will be asked to fill out an activity packet to encourage active listening and learning. There will be prizes offered to the student or group of students that most accurately and most completely fill out the packet.

This is the first time this activity has been organized so there are no previous outline of a similar activity

The purpose of this activity is to get students excited about engineering, to help the students learn about the different engineering disciplines, and to actively engage the students in engineering through the multiple engineering exhibits throughout Purdue University’s campus. Although we are not going to be able to introduce the students to every single discipline of engineering at Purdue (due to time limits) we will focus on a few of the major disciplines. For parts of the tour, students will be engaged by professors here at the university, which will explain how important their specific discipline of engineering is to the world and how the professor’s utilize their engineering skills on a day-to-day fashion. Other parts of the tour will be hands-on for the students. The hands on activities will be used to demonstrate specific types of engineering through direct interaction with major engineering exhibits located throughout Purdue University.

To ensure the kids are actively listening, learning and participating, there will be a quiz given to the students to fill out during the tour. These questions will help emphasize some of the important facts about engineering disciplines and the exhibits the students visit. As an incentive to complete the quiz and be actively involved in the learning process, the group that answers the most questions correctly will win a prize related to engineering. This prize will be yet another way for the students to actively be involved in an engineering activity.

Due to the amount of the students participating, they will be broken down into seven groups each with different time schedule.

BMOC is a collegiate male talent competition where contestants from different campus organizations compete to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer. This year’s competition will be held on February 17th, 2016 at the Elliot Hall of Music. With support from the Purdue Student Community, Purdue Campus, and the greater Lafayette community, we know that the funds that our members raise are truly making a difference.

This year we will be holding a 5K Run/Walk at Purdue University to help in our efforts to fight against breast cancer. The 5K will be held on October 15th, 2016 and anyone is welcome to participate! Please help us to raising awareness for a great cause!

Birthday Ball 2016

November 04, 2016 | 5:00 PM - 11:00 PM

Traditions hold great importance to all services of the United States military. For the Navy and Marine Corps combat team celebrating the founding of the branches is one of those honored traditions. Every year, at every command, both branches celebrate the days of their founding. At Purdue's training command that tradition still holds. The formal edict dinner is proceeded by a ceremony and guest of honor. The ceremony consists of a cake cutting that includes the youngest and oldest members of the command to show the passing of knowledge from young to old. There is also a distinguished guest speaker who passes on knowledge and experience to the command. This event includes leadership opportunism as well as a deeper understanding for the meaning of tradition for the Navy as well as the Marine Corps.
