Dual Career Assistance Program

FY 2023-24

Program Description

The Dual Career Assistance Program offered by the Office of the Provost will continue to provide assistance to spouses and partners of faculty members who are seeking faculty and non-faculty appointments at Purdue.

Financial Resources

Program funds are available to provide partial, temporary funding to the hiring department of the spouse or domestic partner of a new faculty member in order to bridge to a permanent line. Funding for the dual career position is usually shared by:

  1. the department/school/college of the spouse/partner (partner’s unit),
  2. the department/school/college hiring the initial faculty member (originating unit),
  3. and by the Office of the Provost.

The financial arrangements for hires made under the Dual Career Assistance Program will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis with funding maximums being as follows:

  • Assistant professor rank (tenure track and clinical/professional):
Provide 6 years of support (i.e. through the probationary period for tenure track positions) with 1/3 central funding for 2 years plus 1/2 central funding for 4 additional years.  In years 1-2, the remaining 2/3 will be shared by the originating unit and the partner's unit; in years 3-6, the remaining 1/2 would be funded by the partner’s unit.  After 6 years, the partner’s unit is fully responsible for funding the position
  • Associate/full professor ranks (tenure, tenure track and clinical/professional):
Provide 4 years of support with 1/3 central funding for 2 years plus 1/2 central funding for 2 additional years.  In years 1-2, the remaining 2/3 will be shared by the originating unit and the partner's unit; in years 3- 4, the remaining 1/2 would typically be funded by the partner’s unit.  After 4 years, the partner’s unit is fully responsible for funding the position.
  • For non-faculty positions:
Provide 2 years of support with 1/3 central funding.  The remaining 2/3 will be shared by the originating unit and the partner's unit.  After 2 years, the partner’s unit is fully responsible for funding the position.
  • Start-up funding:
Start up funding is expected to be covered by the unit(s), but in exceptional cases units may request up to 50% of the start-up costs for faculty, up to a matching Provost contribution of $200,000 per faculty line. The remaining 50% up to $200,000, along with any amount over the $400,000 total, must be funded by the partner’s unit. Start-up funds will be available for the normal five year period. At the end of five years or if a dual career faculty hire terminates, any unexpended start-up funds must be returned to the Provost in the proportion of the original allocation.

Other Financial and Program Considerations

  • The Dual Career Program will provide support only one time to each dual career candidate.  Before submitting requests, it should be verified by the colleges that the candidate has not received prior support.
  • Hiring a dual career candidate into an existing vacant non-faculty line is not eligible for support from the Dual Career Assistance Program.
  • While this is a bridging program to a regular position, non-faculty hires may require an alternative plan for funding after the bridge period since bridging to a permanent position may not be clear at the time of the hire.

Review and Approval Process

  • Proposals seeking financial support for faculty positions should submit a request directly to the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, Office of the Provost at: approvalsofficeoftheprovost@purdue.edu.  The email subject line should read “Dual Career Assistance”. The request should include the endorsement of the deans for the hiring unit of both the initial faculty member and the spouse or partner.
  • Requests for dual career support for non-faculty positions for spouses or partners should include the endorsement of the deans for the hiring unit of both the initial faculty member and the spouse or partner.  The request should be submitted to the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, Office of the Provost at the following email address: approvalsofficeoftheprovost@purdue.edu. The email subjecline should read “Dual Career Assistance.”  Proposals will be accepted throughout the year.

Placement Assistance

Units that are seeking faculty employment opportunities for a spouse or partner of a faculty member are encouraged to contact the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs (sunil@purdue.edu) who can assist in networking between academic departments.  In addition, those who are seeking employment opportunities for a spouse or partner in a non-faculty appointment are encouraged to contact the Office of Faculty Dual Career & Relocation Services in Human Resources or the Concierge Program in Engineering for assistance.

Assessment

A program assessment report will be prepared annually that will include information for both the retention of the faculty hire and the status of the dual career spouse or partner.
