John Gates, vice provost for diversity and inclusion, has completed the Millennium Leadership Initiative (MLI), a premier leadership development program of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU). MLI provides a professional development experience for individuals who are traditionally underrepresented in the highest ranks of postsecondary education. Participants in the selective program have the opportunity to develop skills, gain a philosophical overview, and build the network and knowledge needed to advance in their careers.
In addition to regular monthly interaction and a conference, the initiative participants, called protégés, also benefit from a yearlong mentorship with an experienced president or chancellor and four months of professional coaching from a retired president or chancellor.
“The initiative provided an excellent opportunity to engage with some of the brightest leaders in higher education today,” said Gates. “I look forward to applying the skills and wisdom that I’m taking away from this experience and to growing the relationships I’ve developed with these truly outstanding program peers.”
