Purdue honored for engaged scholarship

Purdue University has been selected to receive the 2021 Community Partner ESC Award of Excellence in Engaged Scholarship.  The honor is conferred by the Engagement Scholarship Consortium, a non-profit educational organization composed of higher education member institutions.

Purdue is receiving the honor after a national review and selection process for Pharmacists’ Engagement Transforms Community Care in Western Kenya: The Purdue Kenya Partnership Story.

"The Purdue Kenya Partnership is the premier international engagement program associated with any U.S. college of pharmacy," said Steve Abel, Purdue's associate provost for engagement. "By design, this program reflects a symbiotic relationship between our Kenyan counterparts and Purdue University, resulting in optimal benefit to each."

The Purdue Kenya Partnership began in 2003, when the College of Pharmacy partnered with the Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare (AMPATH) consortium in Eldoret, Kenya.

Since then, the program has grown from a student-training program to a comprehensive clinical effort embedded in the community.

The submission for the award was made by Dr. Rahki Karwa, clinical associate professor, College of Pharmacy and a Scholarship of Engagement Provost’s Fellow for the Office of the Provost.

This award recognizes a higher education institution and its exemplary contributions to scholarship and the practice of engaged scholarship. This recognition comes with a monetary award in the amount of $3,000, as well as an engraved commemorative award and two complimentary registrations for this year’s conference.

The award will be officially presented at the 2021 ESC Conference which takes place on a virtual platform September 13–15.
