Provost’s Fellow position drives Fulbright Scholar success

Despite the challenges created by the pandemic during academic year 2020-2021, Purdue was very successful in the Fulbright Scholar Award competition with 6 faculty awardees and 2 alternates. That figure is the third highest number of Fulbright Scholars Purdue has received in a year.

Provost’s Fellow for Fulbright Faculty Awards, Chris Lukasik, says that even in a year of uncertainty, faculty interest in the program remained strong.

“Nearly 200 Purdue faculty from 12 units on campus expressed interest in the Fulbright Award Programs in 2020-21, which is our highest number on record,” said Lukasik. “Our applicant pool for the 2021-2022 Fulbright Scholar Award Program yielded 15 faculty applicants in September of 2020 -  which is also a record.”

Lukasik says the recent numbers represent a 95% improvement in faculty interest year-over-year and a 170% improvement since the Provost’s Fellow position was created. Moreover, he reports that over the past five years, one of out of every two faculty applicants has been named a Fulbright Scholar.

The deadline for applying to the Fulbright Scholar 2022-23 competition is Sept. 15. For more information on the Fulbright Faculty Award Program, contact Christopher Lukasik, provost fellow for Fulbright faculty awards, at clukasik@purdue.edu.

Purdue also now has a centralized location for information on the Fulbright Faculty Awards through the Office of Global Partnerships web page. The site provides faculty with a number of digital resources and content related to the Fulbright Scholar and Specialist programs, including historical data on past awardees.
