What's new with NewU?

We have made significant progress this summer in laying the groundwork for NewU, our new online affiliated campus. On Aug. 10, the Indiana Commission for Higher Education approved Purdue NewU as an Indiana public postsecondary institution. The commission's unanimous vote marks the first of three major approvals Purdue needs to start operating the online university. The U.S. Department of Education is expected to issue its decision on our proposal in September, followed in February by the Higher Learning Commission, which accredits colleges and universities in 19 states, including Indiana. There will be an HLC fact-finding review on Oct. 26-27 and more details will be forthcoming on this visit.

Many of you have submitted questions about the new campus. These have been assembled in an FAQ with answers at the NewU website. We also have been sharing our vision and listening to faculty in a series of departmental sessions led by Frank Dooley, senior vice provost for teaching and learning, and Betty Vandenbosch, NewU chancellor-elect and president of Kaplan University. Many thoughtful questions have been raised and exciting ideas were proposed. We plan to conduct more of these departmental sessions this fall.

Starting next month, we invite everyone at Purdue and Kaplan to a series of five one-hour webinars, each focused on different aspects of NewU. They will provide an opportunity to ask questions of the presenters from both Purdue and Kaplan. Tentative dates, presenters and topics follow:

  • Thursday, Sept. 7, at 10 a.m. — NewU Mission, with Frank Dooley and Betty Vandenbosch.
  • Tuesday, Sept. 19, at 1 p.m. — Online learning with Jon Harbor, director of digital education and associate vice provost.
  • Thursday, Oct. 19, at 2 p.m. — Curriculum Design with Chantal Levesque-Bristol, director of Center of Instructional Excellence.
  • Tuesday, Oct. 31, at 11 a.m. — Competency-Based Education with Jeff Evans, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering technology.
  • Thursday, Nov. 9, at 2 p.m. — Research Pipeline with Jon Harbor.

Each webinar will be limited to the first 1,000 participants, and videos of each will be made available shortly after on the NewU website. Watch for more details in upcoming issues of Purdue Today.
