About 150th Anniversary Named Professors

Background

The Provost’s office invited nominations for Named Professors, based upon the status of the nominees as high-impact, master teachers at Purdue. These will be called the “150th Anniversary Professors.” We believe that this is a fitting acknowledgement of the importance of career-long, outstanding teaching for the excellence of the university.

Criteria for selection:

Principal criteria:  Sustained, outstanding, high-impact teaching, as shown by one or more of the following:

  1. History of outstanding teaching evaluations from faculty peers, students, or alumni;
  2. Receipt of Purdue teaching awards at the department/school, college and university level (e.g., the Charles W. Murphy Award, or election to the Teaching Academy); could also include external teaching awards such as Indiana Professor of the Year or disciplinary education awards;
  3. Development or transformation of courses and/or curricula

Additional criteria:  Mentoring and contributing to the academic, career and personal development of students within and outside the classroom, as evidenced by one or more of the following:

  1. History of outstanding mentoring evaluations from faculty peers, students or alumni;
  2. Receipt of unit, college or university awards for student mentoring;
  3. Sustained involvement as an advisor or mentor to student organizations (e.g., academic clubs, university clubs, club sports, student initiatives)

Selection:  For this inaugural round, we asked each Dean to nominate a faculty member from their college, with the four largest colleges (Engineering, Science, CLA and Agriculture) nominating two.  A committee of a 13 senior faculty reviewed and ranked the dossiers – this group was drawn from across the colleges, comprised mainly of members of the Teaching Academy and past winners of the Murphy Award, and included Distinguished and Named Professors.  Their rankings and detailed reviews were used to select the first “class” of 150th Anniversary Professors.
