About Nicky | Register for a K-9 Demonstration

Standifer and NickyOfficer Andy Standifer and K-9 Nicky completed a five-week, 200-hour dual purpose K-9 training program at Vohne Liche Kennels in Denver, Indiana. Vohne Liche Kennels is world renowned for supplying and training service canines for military, federal agencies, and police departments throughout the United States.

About Nicky

Nicky is a Dutch Shepherd. The courage of the Dutch Shepherds is quickly becoming legendary among police K-9 handlers. The breed standard describes Dutch Shepherds as affectionate, obedient, alert, faithful, and reliable. The breed standard also describes the Dutch Shepherd as having an "intelligent expression and lively temperament," which should not be underestimated.

  • Detection Nicky is trained in detection of marijuana, heroin, methamphetamine, and cocaine. He is also capable of article searches, such as items thrown by fleeing suspects.
  • Tracking Nicky is capable of tracking suspects through all terrain and across all surfaces, when they have been involved in criminal activity. It is important to have a good perimeter when a K-9 is going to be used.
  • Open Area Searches Open area searches can be conducted of both suspects and narcotics, this also includes searches in wooded, industrial, and residential. Perimeters are also important for area searches.
  • Protection and Apprehension Nicky is a dual purpose K-9, this means that he is also trained in bite work for the protection of the handler, other officers and the citizens in the community. He will also catch fleeing suspects and apprehend them until Officer Standifer takes him off of the suspect.

Adding a K-9 to assist us in protecting our community will further enhance our community policing efforts. Officer Standifer and Nicky will be called upon not only to detect narcotics and enforce laws, but also to provide another avenue for us to reach out to our community and provide education and demonstrations designed to prevent criminal activity.

To register for an in-person demonstration by the K-9 Unit, visit the registration page and select "K-9 Demonstration" on the form. You will be contacted by the Police Department.
