| OnBoard: Before They Go & Virtual Event Invitation |
|
We understand sending your Boilermaker to Purdue could have you experiencing mixed emotions. You are likely excited to see your child begin their college journey and proud of their accomplishments. As your Boilermaker’s last days of summer wrap up, we want to share some advice we hope will help as you make final plans for your student's first weeks as a Boilermaker.
Communications with your Boilermaker
-
Establish a communication schedule with your student that allows you to keep up with how they're doing without being intrusive.
-
Be creative in communication. Use phone calls, text, FaceTime, email or even a written letter (who doesn’t love getting something in the mail?)
-
You can also send your student a Boilergram! A Boilergram is an email message sent from home written by a family member or a friend. Parent & Family Connections will send these supportive messages to your Boilermaker’s inbox after the first week of classes.
-
Send care packages. Is there something from home that they can’t find at Purdue? Whether they admit it or not, young adults like care packages from home. Click here for helpful tips and campus addresses when mailing packages to your on-campus student.
-
Visits home and from parents are welcomed by students and parents. Coordinate a schedule that allows your Boilermaker to become comfortable on campus and know that they still have their place back home.
You're invited!
Join us virtually as Parent & Family Connections welcome Mary Dell Harrington and Lisa Endlich Heffernan, co-founders of Grown & Flown, the number one site for parents of teens, college students and young adults.
Mary Dell and Lisa are co-authors of Grown and Flown: How to Support Your Teen, Stay Close as a Family, and Raise Independent Adults.
These speakers will share their knowledge about what your students may experience during the first few weeks of college. They will also provide suggestions to help you coach your Boilermaker as they transition through the college experience.
Have a question you would like to submit for the presentation? Do so here. The form is only available until 5:00 p.m. ET Sunday, August 13. |
