Purdue Staff and Faculty Invited to "Orientation Updates" Webinar to Learn More about this Year's Virtual STAR, BGR Programs

Purdue’s Orientation Programs will host an “Orientation Updates” webinar to provide an overview of the summer 2021 orientation process for summer and fall beginning undergraduate students.

The session will be streamed live at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, April 20. Viewers can watch the session live on the Orientation Programs website or YouTube channel. The recording will be accessible after the live event using the same YouTube link.

One significant update includes plans to offer the Boiler Gold Rush (BGR) program to undergraduate students who completed all or part of their first year as a Purdue student online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We have about 970 current first-year students who have been part of the Purdue community for the past year but for various reasons haven’t been able to join us on campus,” says Craig Johnson, director of Orientation Programs. “We hope that by offering these students the chance to participate in BGR, they will get a welcome to campus they deserve and have been waiting so long to receive.”

BGR registration is currently open for new beginner and transfer students. Orientation Programs will send an email invitation to the currently online first-year students with a link to register later in April.

The webinar will also provide additional details on the following programs:

Virtual Student Transition, Advising and Registration (VSTAR)

This summer, all undergraduate first-year and transfer students for summer and fall terms will participate in Virtual Student Transition, Advising and Registration (VSTAR). VSTAR opens for students on Monday, May 10, 2021. Students can complete VSTAR at any pace but must complete the course (in Brightspace) and meet with their academic advisor by June 30, 2021.

Pre-Arrival Homework

After VSTAR, undergraduate first-year and transfer students will be enrolled in Pre-Arrival Homework. This online course facilitated through Brightspace introduces students to a variety of topics in a centralized way to engage all students in this content prior to the start of their first term. Pre-Arrival Homework will launch on Monday, July 12.

Boiler Gold Rush (BGR) and Boiler Gold Rush International (BGRi)

This fall, all undergraduate first-year and transfer students for summer and fall terms will be eligible to participate in Boiler Gold Rush (BGR). Additionally, international students will be eligible to participate in Boiler Gold Rush International (BGRi). Domestic students who believe they may benefit from international student-specific programming may opt in to participate in BGRi as well. BGRi will take place as a track during BGR, not as a pre-BGR program as was done in 2019 and prior. At this time, plans for move-in and events are still being finalized, but expect that BGR and BGRi will take place during the week of Aug. 16-21, 2021.
