BGR Student Orientation Committee

Student Orientation Committee
What is SOC?

The Student Orientation Committee (SOC) works all year to create and run Boiler Gold Rush, the week-long orientation program for new Boilermakers. The SOC consists of the chair and three subcommittees: Recruitment and Selection, Training and Development, and Orientation Initiatives.

SOC Chair

The SOC Chair position is designed to have an undergraduate student leader work cohesively with a team of peers to facilitate the vision and mission of Orientation Programs’ student staff for the upcoming academic year. This role is the “face” of Orientation Programs, for the student leaders that are part of it, and a liaison to the Professional Staff that will interact with this student throughout the year. Their relationship is built early on with Professional Staff, and is critical to the success of the SOC.

Orientation Initiatives

The individuals representing Orientation Initiatives are responsible for the coordination of a diversity awareness campaign, development and implementation of Freezone programs. They also work to create a culture of vulnerability, storytelling, and affinity to Orientation Programs amongst our student staff.

Recruitment and Selection

The individuals representing Recruitment and Selection are responsible for the coordination of the Team Supervisor and Team Leader recruitment processes such as creating Call-outs, and the design and implementation of the Team Supervisor and Team Leader interview and selection processes.

Training and Development

The individuals representing Training and Development are responsible for training all levels of our program which include Team Supervisors and Team Leaders throughout the course of the year in preparation for Boiler Gold Rush.

Being involved with Orientation was truly a unique experience that I truly believe I cannot have from any other program. Boiler Gold Rush gives the distinct experience of leadership, collaboration, and growth for all those involved. At every level (Team Leader, Team Supervisor, Student Orientation Committee) students are given the responsibility of looking after other students and being their guide throughout the program!
