Resources include emergency text notifications, a personal safety app and transportation programs.

PurdueALERT Emergency Notification System

PurdueALERT is the university’s emergency notification system. In Indianapolis, the system consists of text messaging, email and the social platform X (@PurdueALERT). There are also all-hazard outdoor warning sirens that may be activated during a campus emergency or severe weather.

PurdueALERT is also used to communicate campus operational status changes on the Campus Emergency Status website, including closings or delays due to winter weather.

The campus community is strongly encouraged to sign up for PurdueALERT emergency text notifications. Up to three numbers may be registered.

SafeZone App

The SafeZone app is a personal safety resource available in Indianapolis that provides emergency support in the palm of your hand.

Comparable to emergency blue light telephones in West Lafayette, this wireless option provides an easy and consistent way to receive help at the Indianapolis location. SafeZone brings together personal safety tools, emergency communication and wellbeing resources into one platform. It is a location-based app that will help you stay informed and provide the ability to request assistance quickly and discreetly.

The app may be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play.

Safe Ride with Lyft

Last semester, a safe ride pilot program proved to be successful at the Indianapolis location and the program is back for the 2026-27 academic year. Safe Ride with Lyft is available for students to book rides to and from several campus destinations in a geo-fenced area, including the Student Center, Lux on Capitol, the National Institute for Fitness and Sport, 16 Tech Innovation District and some nearby healthcare facilities.

The service operates seven days a week from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Students should watch for direct emails from Administrative Operations and Lyft to sign up and receive credits.

Safe Walk Program

The Safe Walk program is available through the IU Indianapolis Police Department for those needing to get anywhere west of West Street on campus. By calling 317-274-SAFE (7233), an officer will arrive to provide a safe walk 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Campus community members are encouraged to save this number in their phone so it is available if needed in the future. Please note the Safe Walk program does not provide services to the Student Center or Lux on Capitol.

“We encourage students, faculty and staff to become familiar with the safety resources available to them,” said Evan Hawkins, executive director for Administrative Operations in Indianapolis. “Knowing where to turn for help can make a meaningful difference as we all share the responsibility to make safety a top priority.”

Additional resources for Indianapolis, including building emergency plans and information on how to report a safety concern, are available on the Indianapolis Operations website.

As a new academic year begins, those attending classes, working and living in Indianapolis are encouraged to sign up for and become familiar with the available safety resources.
