The Purdue Memorial Union (PMU) ground floor renovation has been recognized as a recipient of the Association of College Unions International (ACUI) Facility Design Award<\/a>.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Presented to PMU staff at the\u00a02024 ACUI Annual Conference<\/a>, this award honors\u00a0Workshop Architects<\/a>\u00a0and Purdue University and recognizes the significant role the union plays in enhancing student experiences and fostering community on campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ACUI Facility Design Awards honor excellence in the design of student-centered facilities that promote campus community building and support student learning. Recognizing excellence across various budget categories, these awards acknowledge projects ranging from new college union buildings to renovations, additions and outdoor environments.”We are delighted that the Purdue Memorial Union is receiving recognition for its design,” said Zane Reif, senior director of Purdue Memorial Union and Auxiliary Services. “It\u2019s a testament to the hard work of many talented individuals from Purdue University, Workshop Architects, Aramark and Tipton Architects. While the award brings international attention to this project, the true value is the day-to-day use by thousands of students and guests on campus. We have broken attendance records in the PMU each semester, which means we are a premiere destination for individuals experiencing what it means to be a Boilermaker. We will continue to do our best to offer outstanding services and hospitality in an award-winning facility.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The $35.7 million ground floor renovation, completed in 2022, saw the creation of new outdoor terraces, installation of four programming stages, and a fresh development of the marketplace featuring 12 new food concepts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, Purdue symbolism and historical artifacts were meticulously included throughout the renovation, paying homage to Purdue\u2019s rich heritage. From the limestone markers unearthed during excavation to century-old brick and concrete walls, every detail celebrates Purdue and the union\u2019s storied past. Additionally, artifacts from the beloved Pappy\u2019s Sweet Shop were thoughtfully integrated into the design. \u201cWe are honored to receive this recognition for the transformation of the Purdue Memorial Union,\u201d remarked Peter van den Kieboom, architect with Workshop Architects. \u201cDeep collaboration with the Purdue community breathed new life into this treasured 100-year-old icon whose history has deep roots in the student union movement. In addition to adding more space for a growing student body, our collective goal was to celebrate Purdue University\u2019s rich legacy and traditions with students, staff, alumni, and visitors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reif, along with Kieboom, are confident that the renovated PMU will remain a hub for students to gather and feel part of something bigger for the next century. As students continue to benefit from the PMU\u2019s revitalized amenities and vibrant atmosphere, its impact on campus life remains undeniable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Purdue Memorial Union is part of the Administrative Operations organization, which supports the university by providing safe, reliable and transformative services. Through initiatives like the transformative ground floor renovation, aimed at fostering community engagement and expanding student learning opportunities, the PMU exemplifies Administrative Operations\u2019 dedication to powering Purdue and its diverse community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
