While completing his first physics master\u2019s in France, he began an internship at C2N, a lab focused on nanoelectronics and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nist.gov\/semiconductors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">semiconductors<\/a>, a term that encompasses a range of materials with electrical conductivity that act as the building blocks of modern electronics. Yordanov had been interested in microelectronics and semiconductor technology since he was in college, but getting to work in the semiconductor industry made it all click \u2013 he realized he had found what he was searching for.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe moment it all came together was when I first entered the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nist.gov\/semiconductors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">clean room<\/a> (a highly controlled environment where semiconductors are manufactured),\u201d Yordanov said. \u201cIt was such a cool experience, and it solidified that this is where I wanted my research to develop.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interested in eventually pursuing a PhD, Yordanov knew that getting a specialized master\u2019s in semiconductors and microelectronics would help make him more competitive. While searching for programs, Yordanov came across Purdue University\u2019s Master of Science in Microelectronics and Semiconductors, a new program offered online by Purdue\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/Engr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">College of Engineering.<\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div  class=\"purdue-home-cta-strap \">\n    <div class=\"section has-black-background\">\n        <div class=\"container\">\n            <p class=\"purdue-home-cta-strap__content\"><strong>Ready to Learn More About the Master of Science in Microelectronics and Semiconductors program<\/strong>?<\/p>\n            <div class=\"purdue-home-cta-strap--wrap\">\n                                                            <a class=\"purdue-home-button\" href=\"https:\/\/discover.online.purdue.edu\/programs\/microelectronics-semiconductors.php?utm_source=puo&amp;utm_medium=press_release&amp;utm_campaign=IDE-MSE-OL_SC\" target=\"_self\" >Learn More<\/a>\n                  \n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After seeing how well Purdue\u2019s program matched his interests, Yordanov decided to apply, but he still had some reservations. He loved that the program focused on semiconductors specifically, and he appreciated that there was an emphasis on working with corporate partners to ensure students had strong career pathways. However, starting a program in the United States was a big leap, even though he\u2019d be studying online. Before he accepted his admission, he got some much-needed encouragement from a colleague of his who was familiar with Purdue\u2019s reputation.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI worked with this person at a startup that built open-source software for chip design, and I decided to reach out and ask him what he thought of taking a semiconductor program at Purdue,\u201d Yordanov said. \u201cHis opinion was that Purdue\u2019s engineering programs were really well-known and that I should go for it. That was the encouragement I needed.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, Yordanov enrolled as a full-time student and began taking courses soon after. Though he was studying online, Yordanov appreciated the interactive coursework where students got to collaborate with their peers and professors, as well as the constant feedback he received from the teaching assistants to ensure students were getting the most out of their courses. Most of his classmates were professional engineers, so Yordanov had plenty of opportunities to network with industry experts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since Yordanov was a full-time student, he was able to work through his master\u2019s quickly by taking several classes at once. His professors were supportive and helpful throughout this process, always answering questions and helping him explore his interests. The course assignments were practical and hands-on, and he enjoyed connecting with his classmates who came from many different science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yordanov took several memorable classes that helped develop his interests and narrow down his career goals. He took a course called <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/online\/courses\/integrated-circuit-mems-fabrication-lab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Integrated Circuit\/MEMS Fabrication Lab<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/ECE\/People\/Faculty\/ptProfile?resource_id=270676&amp;group_id=2571\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Muhammad Hussain<\/a> that got him used to working in a clean room by allowing him to explore a virtual clean room environment. The course was a collaboration with technology company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intel.com\/content\/www\/us\/en\/homepage.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Intel<\/a>, so all the assignments were career-focused and relevant to the field. He also took a course called <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/online\/courses\/primer-rf-circuit-design1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Primer on RF Design<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/ECE\/People\/ptProfile?resource_id=2967\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dimitrios Peroulis<\/a> that introduced him to circuit design. It was a difficult course, but well executed, and it gave him the confidence he needed to break into the design field. Ever since an internship at <a href=\"https:\/\/gf.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GlobalFoundries<\/a> while working on his physics master\u2019s in France, Yordanov wanted to learn more about chip design, and the courses at Purdue were an excellent pathway&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe online platforms, computing resources and software tools offered for our courses were world-class and some of them were even developed at Purdue, so getting access to them and learning how to use them was a privilege,\u201d Yordanov said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column special-pad is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/online\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/vasil-landscape.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7052\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/online\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/vasil-landscape.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/online\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/vasil-landscape-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/online\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/vasil-landscape-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>Yordanov also appreciated the program\u2019s focus on connecting students with industries and internships. He did an internship at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imec-int.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IMEC,<\/a> an international research and development organization focused on nanoelectronics and digital technologies. That internship gave him important research experience, and the Purdue program\u2019s flexible schedule made it possible to work, do research and study at the same time. He even presented his research at several conferences, where other attendees regularly recognized Purdue University\u2019s name.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt felt good to be recognized for going to such a well-known university,\u201d Yordanov said. \u201cPurdue definitely comes with a tremendous name recognition, networking opportunities and positive academic experience.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yordanov always wanted to pursue a PhD after graduation, and getting research experience at Purdue helped him achieve that goal. He was recently offered a PhD position at a leading institution for semiconductor research. He\u2019s also been offered several industry positions working at semiconductor companies on chip design. Either way, he has ample opportunities to influence the future of semiconductor design and research.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s nice to have multiple options \u2013 either working in academia or in industry,\u201d Yordanov said. \u201cEither way, I\u2019ll be doing something closely related to my degree.
