AI’s rapid growth in influence can be seen everywhere. It’s embedded in online project management software platforms, available through most search engines and used in most offices.

But it has also morphed from a handy tool to a digital twin — a cyber partner who can inspire greater creativity while assisting with less glamourous, essential tasks.

Instead of replacing project managers, AI is expected to enhance the productivity of the better-prepared, more-informed ones. Equipping those future-forward project managers is Purdue Polytechnic Institute’s Graduate Certificate in Project Management.

In addition to mastering project management techniques aligned with the Project Management Institute’s Body of Knowledge (PMBOK®) standards and preparing students for the Project Management Professional (PMP®) exam, the project management graduate certificate program gives students the keys to unlocking the possibilities of AI.

For project managers, whose role consists of initiating, coordinating and monitoring multiple stages of tasks spread over several initiatives at any given time, partnering with AI can be a game changer.

“The impact is transformational,” said Purdue Polytechnic Institute associate professor Katrenia Reed Hughes, a world-renowned speaker for the Project Management Institute.

“Historically, project managers spent significant time gathering updates, tracking schedules, building reports and managing documentation. AI now has the ability to streamline many of those functions, allowing project professionals to focus more heavily on strategy, communication, stakeholder engagement and organizational alignment.”

The revolution has begun

According to the Project Management Institute, AI will run 80 percent of project management tasks by 2030. It is currently operating as a researcher, meeting recorder, scheduler and task manager. But with its evolving functionality, AI is tackling more challenging and time-consuming tasks.

“Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming integrated into nearly every stage of the project lifecycle,” Reed Hughes said.

“Organizations are using AI-supported tools for scheduling, predictive analytics, risk identification, reporting, resource forecasting, stakeholder communication, and decision support.”

Build AI expertise for project management with Purdue University

                                                            Request Info

In a 2025 Project Management Journal article, authors Dominik Kögel, Sandro Meile and Lourdes Canos-Daros noted that AI usage is becoming more sophisticated, moving from “simple, repetitive tasks” to “strategic decision-making.”

“It is becoming increasingly clear that AI will not replace the project manager anytime soon,” they wrote. “Rather, there seems to be a tendency toward hybrid use, meaning that the contributions of humans and AI will merge into each other.”

That same year IBM staff writers Amanda McGrath and Amanda Downie found AI assisting with jobs ranging from taking meeting notes and creating updates to finding answers for FAQs from large knowledge repositories.

As a result, tasks that once took days to accomplish can now be done in minutes with the proper AI tools, freeing project managers to be more creative and innovative. With AI usage so ubiquitous, she said the competitive balance will tip in favor of companies and team leaders who utilize it judiciously.

“What makes this moment particularly significant is that AI is not just automating administrative tasks. It is changing how project leaders process information, evaluate risks, communicate with stakeholders and make strategic decisions,” Reed Hughes said. “At the same time, the growing use of AI has elevated the importance of human-centered leadership skills.”

That’s where advanced education can benefit both practicing project managers and those entering the profession.
