As the veterinary field becomes increasingly competitive, breaking into the industry requires more than just strong grades. Many applicants enter the process with similar academic backgrounds, making it harder to stand out through coursework alone. At the same time, veterinary programs are placing greater emphasis on applied knowledge and real-world readiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Department of Animal Sciences in Purdue University\u2019s College of Agriculture is launching a series of online undergraduate courses through the Fundamentals of Animal Sciences<\/a> program. This 100% online curriculum includes five courses at present, with a sixth scheduled to launch in 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each course is designed to introduce students to real-world concepts in animal health, behavior and care, with an emphasis on how those principles are applied across species and settings \u2014 all before they apply to veterinary school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn accordance with the land-grant mission, our educational programs are informed by the latest scientific discoveries,\u201d said Julie Mahoney, clinical assistant professor of online programs in animal sciences. \u201cThey prepare students to use their careers to address the needs of both people and animals in their local communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Purdue, that approach is backed by one of the top-ranked agriculture programs in the world. The College of Agriculture is ranked No. 3 in the Unted States and No. 6 globally<\/a>, according to the 2026 QS World University rankings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Course topics are designed to reflect the realities of working with animals across a variety of settings. Students explore key areas such as nutrition, physiology, production systems and animal welfare, building a deeper understanding of how these concepts influence animal health, behavior and care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis program gives students the knowledge necessary to answer a wide range of genuine, in-field questions,\u201d said Mahoney. \u201cOur animal sciences curriculum contextualized basic biological knowledge within animal husbandry principles, developing a foundational framework and a solid vocabulary that prepares students to further those skills in veterinary school.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the end of the program, students gain not only foundational knowledge in animal science, but also a clearer understanding of how that knowledge translates into real-world decision-making and problem solving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
