Research center to celebrate opening of \u2018Smart Crossways\u2019 operations center at Purdue Airport to advance UAV efforts<\/strong><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Purdue University researchers are bringing together their collective expertise to develop the nation\u2019s first smart air corridor. The Smart Crossways of America, a 200-mile-long air corridor, will enable uncrewed aerial vehicles to safely transport cargo, medicine and people from Purdue\u2019s West Lafayette campus to the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Muscatatuck Urban Training Center in southern Indiana and Indianapolis. To kick off this effort, Purdue\u2019s Center on AI for Digital, Autonomous and Augmented Aviation<\/a> will unveil its state-of-the-art testing facility, the Smart Operations Center<\/a> for Smart Crossways, at the Purdue University Airport during a public event from 4-5:30 p.m. Sept. 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Purdue research: More than green energy, wind turbines are cost-saving CO2<\/sub> eliminators<\/strong><\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In a \u201cgame-changing\u201d win against climate change, Purdue University research has discovered that wind turbines can not only provide the first clean-energy method to capture carbon dioxide, but they also can do so at a cost significantly lower than CO2<\/sub> capture methods in use today. Led by Luciano Castillo<\/a>, the Kenninger Professor of Renewable Energy and Power Systems in the School of Mechanical Engineering<\/a>, the study<\/a>, recently published in the Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy, reveals the untapped potential of wind turbines to reduce CO2<\/sub> \u2014 a global warming culprit produced by power generation from fossil fuels, industrial emissions, chemical and petroleum production, and agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Purdue\u2019s Transportation and Autonomous Systems Institute makes a difference in Indianapolis<\/strong><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Nearing its 20-year anniversary, Purdue\u2019s Transportation and Autonomous Systems Institute (TASI) in Indianapolis is continuing to work toward enhancing safety for drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable road users such as e-scooter riders. Through collaboration and partnership with academics, industry, government and other organizations, Purdue researchers at TASI conduct world-class research in connected and autonomous vehicles and intelligent transportation systems, driving innovation through safety discoveries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Painter receives one of Purdue University\u2019s highest awards<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Purdue President Mung Chiang presented men\u2019s basketball head coach Matt Painter<\/a> with the Order of the Griffin, which recognizes outstanding service to Purdue by men and women whose commitment has gone beyond the call of duty and greatly benefited the university. Entering his 20th season as the head coach at Purdue, Painter guided the Boilermakers to the national championship game for the first time in 55 years, a 34-5 overall record, the Big Ten regular-season title for the second straight year and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Purdue\u2019s College of Education receives $34.9M grant to continue helping Indiana students, teachers succeed<\/strong><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Many Indiana students need help transitioning successfully from middle school to high school to postsecondary opportunities. The U.S. Department of Education, through its Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) campaign, seeks to ensure students across the country are prepared for college. The Indiana GEAR UP<\/a> program, housed in the Purdue University<\/a> College of Education<\/a>, has been awarded $34.9 million over seven years to continue its efforts to support Indiana students and educators. It is the sixth largest federal grant ever awarded to Purdue University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
