{"id":868,"date":"2023-03-21T21:34:00","date_gmt":"2023-03-21T21:34:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/?p=868"},"modified":"2024-05-22T21:37:35","modified_gmt":"2024-05-22T21:37:35","slug":"indiana-gear-up-creating-doors-and-opportunities-for-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/2023\/Q1\/indiana-gear-up-creating-doors-and-opportunities-for-students","title":{"rendered":"Indiana GEAR UP: Creating doors and opportunities for students"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"purdue-initial-words-wrap\"><p class=\"purdue-initial-words wp-block-paragraph\">WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. &mdash;<\/p> \n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.education.purdue.edu\/faculty-profiles\/name\/virginia-bolshakova\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Virginia Bolshakova<\/a>&nbsp;directs the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/indianagearup.org\/about\/our-mission.php\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Indiana Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP)<\/a>, which received $24.5 million in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Department of Education<\/a>&nbsp;funding in 2016. The program starts with cohorts of seventh graders and sees them through the first year of college or education beyond high school.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indiana GEAR UP\u2019s two main goals are to increase the number of students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education and to conduct research to better understand student STEM learning, persistence and entry into college and careers<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently the first cohort, the Class of 2022, is in its first year of postsecondary education, and the second cohort, the Class of 2023, is preparing to graduate from high school and begin college in the fall of 2023. Now in its seventh year, Indiana GEAR UP is led by a collaborative team of staff from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/\">Purdue University<\/a>\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.education.purdue.edu\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">College of Education<\/a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.in.gov\/che\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Indiana Commission for Higher Education<\/a>.
