{"id":6958,"date":"2023-10-04T09:19:00","date_gmt":"2023-10-04T13:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/?p=6958"},"modified":"2024-07-26T09:24:33","modified_gmt":"2024-07-26T13:24:33","slug":"purdue-center-addresses-pressing-challenge-of-securing-semiconductor-chips-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/2023\/Q4\/purdue-center-addresses-pressing-challenge-of-securing-semiconductor-chips-2","title":{"rendered":"Purdue center addresses pressing challenge of securing semiconductor chips"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"purdue-initial-words-wrap\"><p class=\"purdue-initial-words\">WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. &mdash;<\/p> \n<p>Purdue University\u2019s emergence as a leader in semiconductor chips also requires it to usher in a new level of security that protects those essential chips needed for everything from your car and cellphone to artificial intelligence and machine learning.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/CSME\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Center for Secure Microelectronics Ecosystem<\/a>\u00a0(CSME) at Purdue is tackling that challenge by developing the latest advances to protect today\u2019s and tomorrow\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/semiconductors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">microelectronics and semiconductors<\/a>. Purdue&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/Engr\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">College of Engineering<\/a>&nbsp;faculty and programs lead the effort for better security through research advances in microelectronics. CSME is addressing security challenges through grants funded by the center\u2019s industrial and government partners for research projects across the nation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cInitial chip design, fabrication and the final packaging into circuit boards is spread out across not only companies but also countries now,\u201d said&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/ECE\/People\/ptProfile?resource_id=32402\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Joerg Appenzeller<\/a>, CSME co-director and Purdue\u2019s Barry M. and Patricia L. Epstein Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. \u201cThis center ensures the semiconductor industry will be more resilient and prepared for security challenges, both large and small.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CSME was announced in spring 2022 as a part of Purdue\u2019s continued leadership in semiconductors. It is joined by university partners Arizona State, the University of Florida, Texas A&amp;M and Georgia Tech. The center launched with support from founding companies TSMC and Synopsys in conjunction with support through a DOD-funded workforce development program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TSMC announced an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2023\/Q2\/purdue-tsmc-extend-partnership-on-semiconductor-research-and-workforce-development.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">extension of its partnership<\/a>&nbsp;with Purdue in June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For CSME, the microelectronics supply chain represents as much potential for security issues as other considerations, which oftentimes means researchers are tackling problems akin to looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/new.www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/raghunathan-csmeLO.jpg\" alt=\"Anand Raghunathan\" class=\"wp-image-6960\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/raghunathan-csmeLO.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/raghunathan-csmeLO-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/raghunathan-csmeLO-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Anand Raghunathan. (Purdue University photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHardware security threats range from recycling older components as new, counterfeit parts to accidental or deliberate modifications to hardware that leaks sensitive information or causes malfunction in the field, to name a few,\u201d said&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/CSME\/people\/ptProfile?resource_id=46143&amp;group_id=252311&amp;photo=right\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Anand Raghunathan<\/a>, CSME co-director and the Silicon Valley Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. \u201cOur researchers are pursuing advances that will ensure a secure microelectronics ecosystem by eliminating traditional and emerging security attacks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Purdue is a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=n6ypVdMqVcM&amp;_ga=2.192245290.1680880084.1651503973-882778196.1634741976\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">national leader<\/a>&nbsp;in microelectronics research, spanning the semiconductor ecosystem in software and hardware. CSME is one of six major centers serving as anchors for that work, with a number of ongoing research projects focusing on various aspects of design, packaging and reliability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Semiconductor and workforce development work by CSME represents a pillar of the recently announced&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/computes\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Purdue Computes<\/a>. The initiative amplifies the university\u2019s dominant position today in education, research and industry partnerships in&nbsp;semiconductors. Under Purdue Computes, $100 million of semiconductor facilities are planned, including upgrades to the Birck Nanotechnology Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CSME recognizes the need for new generations of skilled professionals to advance semiconductor security. (Photo provided)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>CSME will provide research projects ripe for graduate students in SCALE, who will form the future workforce prepared to address the challenges of designing secure microelectronics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Global connections to advance semiconductor research and workforce development have been a persistent pursuit at Purdue, which has established several international partnerships.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On May 21 Purdue President Mung Chiang signed a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2023\/Q2\/purdue-signs-landmark-u.s-japan-agreement-in-semiconductors-at-g7-summit.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">landmark international agreement during the G7 summit in Hiroshima, Japan.<\/a>&nbsp;Chiang signed another agreement in May for Purdue to become&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2023\/Q2\/purdue-establishes-milestone-semiconductor-alliance-with-india-agreement-provides-foundation-to-advance-workforce-development-joint-research-and-innovation-and-global-industry-collaborations.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the flagship academic partner and collaborator with the government of India<\/a>.&nbsp;In addition, Purdue, the state of Indiana and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iedc.in.gov\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Indiana Economic Development Corp.<\/a>&nbsp;announced a partnership May 3 with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2023\/Q2\/global-partnership-extends-purdue-states-reach-as-the-midwestern-hub-of-semiconductor-innovation.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">imec, a Belgium-based semiconductor research and development firm<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About Purdue University<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Purdue University is a public research institution with excellence at scale.
