{"id":6023,"date":"2024-04-05T14:40:00","date_gmt":"2024-04-05T14:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/?post_type=purduetoday&#038;p=6023"},"modified":"2024-08-15T08:31:09","modified_gmt":"2024-08-15T12:31:09","slug":"purdue-trustees-approve-faculty-promotions-and-transfers-reaffirm-commitment-to-academic-freedom-and-tenure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/2024\/Q2\/purdue-trustees-approve-faculty-promotions-and-transfers-reaffirm-commitment-to-academic-freedom-and-tenure","title":{"rendered":"Purdue trustees approve faculty promotions and transfers, reaffirm commitment to academic freedom and tenure"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>HAMMOND, Ind.<\/strong> \u2014 The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/purdue.edu\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Purdue University<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/bot\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Board of Trustees<\/a>&nbsp;on Friday (April 5) approved the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/purduetoday\/releases\/2024\/Q2\/trustees-approve-faculty-promotions-tenured-faculty-transferring-from-iupui-to-purdue-west-lafayette.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">promotion of 153 faculty<\/a>&nbsp;across the West Lafayette, Northwest, Fort Wayne and IUPUI campuses for the 2024-25 academic year, and an additional eight who have been granted tenure in West Lafayette units effective upon their transfer from IUPUI on July 1, 2024.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trustees annually approve promotions in April, per the Purdue&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/policies\/academic-research-affairs\/ib2.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">academic tenure and promotion policy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In conjunction with the approval of other faculty promotions and transfers,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/purduetoday\/releases\/2024\/Q2\/tenure-recognition-for-purdue-university-in-indianapolis-faculty.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">46 faculty members in Indianapolis<\/a>, who will join Purdue on July 1, will have \u201cuniversity tenure in Indianapolis\u201d \u2014 the faculty tenure home established in August 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Purdue trustees voted to reaffirm the university\u2019s commitment to academic freedom and faculty tenure, as initially outlined in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2024\/Q1\/purdue-reaffirmation-of-academic-freedom-and-faculty-tenure.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Purdue Reaffirmation Statement<\/a>&nbsp;made Feb. 27, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, trustees voted to delegate certain authority to develop plans for compliance with the requirements of Senate Enrolled Act 202, which is set to become law on July 1, including with respect to post-tenure review. Following this exercise, and as has long been true in granting tenure at Purdue, only very rarely will a review be directly assessed by the Board of Trustees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Board of Trustees, as has always been the case, will continue to cast the final vote on tenure cases, but \u201cnever in Purdue history has the Board of Trustees turned down a proposed promotion submitted by the chief academic officer,\u201d board chairman Michael Berghoff said. \u201cFaculty, across all ranks and tracks, are the backbone of the university, and Purdue will continue to grow our support for faculty success.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About Purdue University<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Purdue University is a public research institution demonstrating excellence at scale.
