{"id":5928,"date":"2023-08-08T16:13:00","date_gmt":"2023-08-08T16:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/?p=5928"},"modified":"2024-07-17T16:19:28","modified_gmt":"2024-07-17T16:19:28","slug":"arequipa-nexus-institute-in-peru-receives-4-million-for-phase-3-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/2023\/Q3\/arequipa-nexus-institute-in-peru-receives-4-million-for-phase-3-funding","title":{"rendered":"Arequipa Nexus Institute in Peru receives $4 million for phase 3 funding"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"purdue-initial-words-wrap\"><p class=\"purdue-initial-words\">WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. &mdash;<\/p> \n<p>The multiphase collaboration&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/discoverypark\/arequipa-nexus\/en\/index.php\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Arequipa Nexus Institute for Food, Energy, Water and the Environment<\/a>&nbsp;has received funding for a third phase of projects from&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.unsa.edu.pe\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Universidad Nacional de San Agust\u00edn<\/a>. Launched in March 2018 by UNSA in Arequipa, Peru, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Purdue University<\/a>, the institute is an innovative collaboration focused on key challenges to create a sustainable future for the peoples of Arequipa.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The Arequipa Nexus Institute leverages UNSA faculty, students and infrastructure and the strengths of research faculty and infrastructure from many of Purdue\u2019s colleges, including the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ag.purdue.edu\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">College of Agriculture<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/education.purdue.edu\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">College of Education<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/hhs.purdue.edu\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">College of Health and Human Sciences<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cla.purdue.edu\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">College of Liberal Arts<\/a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/polytechnic.purdue.edu\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Purdue Polytechnic Institute<\/a>. The colleges will work with UNSA to build capacity and the strategic, long-term collaborations needed to address environmental, agroeconomic and social challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are thrilled to continue this important collaboration and provide support that will help UNSA\u2019s faculty address critical environmental challenges while also supporting communities with the greatest needs,\u201d says Lori Hoagland, professor in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ag.purdue.edu\/department\/hla\/index.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture<\/a>&nbsp;and co-director of the Arequipa Nexus Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initial phases of the collaboration occurred between 2018 and 2019 and engaged more than 170 faculty and staff, 38 postdoctoral candidates and over 50 graduate and undergraduate students. The six key topic areas of phases 1 and 2 were natural resources, agriculture and food, technology, sustainable design and teaching, community engagement, and administration. (Photo provided by Arequipa Nexus Institute)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are excited about this new phase of collaborative work with UNSA,\u201d says Daniel Leon-Salas, associate professor in the Purdue Polytechnic Institute and co-director of Arequipa Nexus Institute. \u201cThe projects in this phase have been carefully selected based on their potential impact for the people of Arequipa.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal with phase 3 is to continue to build the knowledge, capacity and tools needed to address grand challenges in the region while also focusing on improving the livelihoods of underserved highland communities in the Colca Valley. The new funding from UNSA will focus on&nbsp;projects aimed at supporting the transition to organic food production, improving alpaca fiber quality, designing small-scale renewable energy systems and creating plans for regenerative tourism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe ability to address environmental, agroeconomic and social challenges in the country and support the long-term relationship with UNSA is one of the exciting roles we play at Purdue,\u201d says Karen Plaut, executive vice president for research.&nbsp;\u201cIt is about research, education and the ability to improve people\u2019s lives by helping them meet their goals.
