{"id":5566,"date":"2022-09-13T12:18:00","date_gmt":"2022-09-13T12:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/?p=5566"},"modified":"2024-08-20T14:04:45","modified_gmt":"2024-08-20T18:04:45","slug":"tech-startup-wavelogix-receives-federal-sbir-grant-to-develop-its-iot-sensors-for-concrete-strength-monitoring","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/2022\/Q3\/tech-startup-wavelogix-receives-federal-sbir-grant-to-develop-its-iot-sensors-for-concrete-strength-monitoring","title":{"rendered":"Tech startup WaveLogix receives federal SBIR grant to develop its IoT sensors for concrete strength monitoring"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"purdue-initial-words-wrap\"><p class=\"purdue-initial-words\">WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. &mdash;<\/p> \n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wavelogix.tech\/\">WaveLogix<\/a>, a startup technology company that is commercializing an Internet of Things sensing system for infrastructure monitoring, has received a six-month SBIR Phase I grant worth $255,996 from the National Science Foundation to develop its technology.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The company\u2019s Rebel brand of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2019\/Q3\/science-to-reveal-how-long-highway-construction-should-actually-take.html\">concrete strength sensors<\/a>&nbsp;improves upon the industry standard to measure concrete strength: breaking multiple field-cured concrete samples. (Image provided by Luna Lu)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The Rebel sensor system directly measures real-time, in-place concrete strength without requiring destructive concrete testing or the development of a maturity curve. The sensors also are not impacted by concrete mix design, meaning the mix can be changed during a project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luna Lu is the founder and chief science officer at WaveLogix. She said the NSF grant will help accelerate WaveLogix\u2019s timeline to market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe funding will help the company accelerate the product development phase, particularly the IoT platform for data processing and sharing,\u201d Lu said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WaveLogix plans to conduct beta testing of the Rebel sensor system in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter the beta testing, we start the manufacturing of sensors, with the focused initial market on roads, bridges and other major infrastructure projects,\u201d Lu said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/CE\/People\/ptProfile?resource_id=128278\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lu<\/a>&nbsp;also is the ACPA Professor at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/CE\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lyles School of Civil Engineering<\/a>&nbsp;with a courtesy appointment in materials engineering. She is the founding director of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/CII\/index_html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Center for Intelligent Infrastructure<\/a>&nbsp;at Purdue University. Lu invented the technology that WaveLogix is commercializing, having disclosed it to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prf.org\/otc\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Purdue Research Foundation Office of Technology Commercialization<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Rebel brand of concrete strength sensors was named a 2021 American Society of Civil Engineers GameChanger.
