Projects including the High-Speed Propulsion Laboratory and the multifaceted Hypersonics Applied Research Facility (HARF) mark national security advances and reflect interest and investment by partners in industry and government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0Hicks received a firsthand look at Purdue\u2019s national security focus at the Maurice J. Hypersonics is a critical area of focus under&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2021\/Q2\/purdue-launches-next-moves-initiatives.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Purdue\u2019s Next Moves<\/a>,&nbsp;strategic initiatives designed to advance the university\u2019s competitive advantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Purdue already has established excellence in other key research areas considered critical to national security, including microelectronics. Strategic initiatives such as the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2022\/Q2\/purdue-launches-nations-first-comprehensive-semiconductor-degrees-program.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first comprehensive Semiconductor Degrees Program<\/a>&nbsp;are intended to prepare a next-generation workforce for industry, while a separate partnership with SkyWater Technology will result in a future&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2022\/Q3\/skywater-technology-chooses-discovery-park-district-at-purdue-for-1.8b-semiconductor-fabrication-facility,-to-create-750-jobs-in-5-years.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">state-of-the-art semiconductor manufacturing facility<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The University began expanding its footprint as a national security hub more than two years ago with announced plans to develop&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2020\/Q1\/purdue-to-develop-worlds-first-mach-8-quiet-wind-tunnel.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the first quiet Mach 8 wind tunnel in the world<\/a>. It will partner with the already existing Mach 6 tunnel on campus as well as a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2020\/Q4\/purdue-hypersonics-receives-boost-from-northrop-grumman-shock-tunnel-donation.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hypersonic pulse (HYPULSE) reflected shock\/expansion tunnel<\/a>, and the establishment of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/research\/pari\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Purdue Applied Research Institute<\/a>, a new, nonprofit research arm of the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The High-Speed Propulsion Laboratory&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2022\/Q2\/purdue-strengthens-national-security-focus-with-new-propulsion-lab.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced in April<\/a>&nbsp;was preceded by projects such as Hypersonics Applied Research Facility (HARF), which will house both the Mach 8 and the HYPULSE reflected\/shock expansion tunnel as well as the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2022\/Q1\/purdue-hypersonics-combines-industry,-academia-in-new-materials-and-manufacturing-center.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hypersonics Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center (HAMTC)<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In February, Purdue was selected by the Air Force Research Labs (AFRL) as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2022\/Q1\/purdue-tapped-as-lead-for-midwest-research-hub-of-new-air-force-program.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the lead academic partner and headquarters<\/a>&nbsp;for the AFRL Regional Research Hub \u2013 Midwest.
