{"id":4990,"date":"2022-09-22T19:53:00","date_gmt":"2022-09-22T19:53:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/?p=4990"},"modified":"2024-08-20T14:02:27","modified_gmt":"2024-08-20T18:02:27","slug":"monon-bioventures-receives-nearly-400000-to-develop-purdue-discovered-glioblastoma-treatment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/2022\/Q3\/monon-bioventures-receives-nearly-400000-to-develop-purdue-discovered-glioblastoma-treatment","title":{"rendered":"Monon Bioventures receives nearly $400,000 to develop Purdue-discovered glioblastoma treatment"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"purdue-initial-words-wrap\"><p class=\"purdue-initial-words\">INDIANAPOLIS and WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. &mdash;<\/p> \n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mononbioventures.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Monon Bioventures LLC<\/a>\u00a0has received a one-year, $398,314 Phase I Small Business Innovation Research, or SBIR, grant from the National Cancer Institute to demonstrate the feasibility of manufacturing a glioblastoma therapeutic created at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pharmacy.purdue.edu\/?_ga=2.35479585.1288485198.1662732366-255675099.1652279830\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Purdue University College of Pharmacy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cGlioblastoma is one of the most aggressive cancers of the central nervous system. It grows, multiplies and spreads quickly, is almost always lethal, and there is no effective cure. New, effective therapies are desperately needed,\u201d said&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipph.purdue.edu\/faculty\/smatosev\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sandro Matosevic<\/a>, the assistant professor in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipph.purdue.edu\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Department of Industrial and Physical Pharmacy<\/a>,&nbsp;who has developed a potential treatment that has been optioned to Monon Bioventures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Matosevic\u2019s work demonstrates that human immune \u201cnatural killer\u201d (NK) cells can be \u201carmed\u201d to specifically attack glioblastomas.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/new.www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/matosevic-sandroLO.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4991\" style=\"width:150px\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/matosevic-sandroLO.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/matosevic-sandroLO-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Sandro Matosevic, assistant professor in the Department of Industrial and Physical Pharmacy, College of Pharmacy, Purdue University (Photo provided by Sandro Matosevic)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cTherapeutics for certain cancers have used related approaches with other immune cells, called T cells, which are obtained from the patient,\u201d Matosevic said. \u201cNatural killer cells can be accepted from multiple donors, however, not just the patient, which makes them much safer and which dramatically expands our ability to manufacture them in large doses to treat many patients. They are also very efficient at killing glioblastoma cells.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joe Trebley, president and CEO of Monon Bioventures, which is housed in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/icbi.indianactsi.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Indiana Center for Biomedical Innovation<\/a>, said the federal funds for Matosevic\u2019s work have the potential to bring hope to patients suffering from glioblastoma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHis discovery provides a critical preclinical proof of concept of the disease,\u201d Trebley said. \u201cOur plans are to translate that discovery into the clinic by first working on the manufacturability of the novel therapeutic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Monon Bioventures will work on the treatment with Matosevic\u2019s laboratory at Purdue and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/genezen.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Genezen<\/a>, a viral vector and gene therapy contract development and manufacturing organization, or CDMO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cArming the NK cells requires genetic modification of the cells through use of an appropriate viral vector as a tool,\u201d Trebley said. \u201cGenezen is a scientific leader in the production of lentiviral vectors and their use in cell transduction, which is delivering genes to cells. We are lucky to have them here with us in Indiana.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dave Wilhite, Genezen\u2019s chief business officer, credited Monon Bioventures for its strong track record in translating innovative discoveries into clinical assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUsing natural killer cells as a therapy is on the cutting edge of innovation and has shown immense promise,\u201d Wilhite said. \u201cThat is Monon Bioventures\u2019 sweet spot, and we are excited to partner with them on this project.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the grant-sponsored work is complete, Monon Bioventures will discuss with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration the company\u2019s plan to move the treatment to clinical studies. After receiving the FDA\u2019s feedback, the company will look to finance the project further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trebley credited the NCI and its SBIR program for critical support of innovation and discovery in the early development phase of cancer research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe grants are highly competitive, yet critical to funding novel potential therapeutics that translate out of academic labs,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Matosevic disclosed his glioblastoma treatment to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prf.org\/otc\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Purdue Research Foundation Office of Technology Commercialization<\/a>, which has applied for a patent to protect the intellectual property.
