Beginning in mid-June, Purdue will host 25 of Africa\u2019s bright, emerging business leaders for a six-week leadership institute, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mandelawashingtonfellowship.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mandela Washington Fellowship<\/a>, the flagship program of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/yali.state.gov\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Young African Leaders Initiative<\/a>&nbsp;(YALI), empowers young African leaders through academic coursework, leadership training, mentoring, networking, professional opportunities and local community engagement. YALI was created in 2010 and supports young Africans as they spur economic growth and prosperity, strengthen democratic governance, and enhance peace and security across Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Established in 2014, the Mandela Washington Fellowship is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2024, and this will be Purdue\u2019s sixth summer hosting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis program brings tremendous value not only to the cohort of fellows from across Africa but also to those within our College of Agriculture and beyond who engage with these dynamic individuals during their time in West Lafayette,\u201d said Bernie Engel, the Glenn W. Sample Dean of Agriculture. \u201cWe look forward to hosting the 2024 fellows and helping them build their entrepreneurial and technical skill sets to support their efforts when they return to their home countries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since its inception, nearly 6,500 young leaders from every country in sub-Saharan Africa have participated in the Mandela Washington Fellowship. The cohort of fellows hosted by Purdue will be part of a group of 700 Mandela Washington Fellows hosted at 28 educational institutions across the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Funded by the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/eca.state.gov\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Department of State\u2019s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs<\/a>&nbsp;and implemented by&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.irex.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">IREX<\/a>, leadership institutes will offer programs that will challenge, motivate and empower young leaders from Africa to tackle the challenges of the 21st century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some highlights of the Purdue program include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fellows will connect with state-level, as well as regional and local, businesses and volunteers through collaborative projects and site visits.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fellows will have the opportunity to give back to the local community through service opportunities with entities such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.food-finders.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Food Finders<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/growlocallafayette.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GrowLocal Lafayette<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/extension.purdue.edu\/county\/tippecanoe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tippecanoe County Extension Office<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lumserve.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lafayette Urban Ministry<\/a>, among others.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fellows will attend different events throughout the summer, including the June 28 welcome reception at the Convergence Center,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tasteoftippecanoe.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Taste of Tippecanoe<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.indianafiddlersgathering.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Indiana Fiddlers\u2019 Gathering<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wabashriverfest.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wabash Riverfest<\/a>\u00a0and Mosey Down Main Street.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After their leadership institutes, fellows will participate in the Mandela Washington Fellowship Summit, where they will take part in networking and panel discussions with each other and with U.S. leaders from the public, private and nonprofit sectors.
