{"id":4580,"date":"2024-01-09T19:07:00","date_gmt":"2024-01-09T19:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/?p=4580"},"modified":"2024-07-05T19:12:13","modified_gmt":"2024-07-05T19:12:13","slug":"purdue-university-receives-100-million-commitment-from-lilly-endowment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/2024\/Q1\/purdue-university-receives-100-million-commitment-from-lilly-endowment","title":{"rendered":"Purdue University receives $100 million commitment from Lilly Endowment"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"purdue-initial-words-wrap\"><p class=\"purdue-initial-words wp-block-paragraph\">WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. &mdash;<\/p> \n<p>Lilly Endowment Inc. has approved grants totaling $100 million to Purdue Research Foundation to support two major Purdue University initiatives, which together will elevate the university, its students and faculty and accelerate new investments in Indiana\u2019s workforce and economy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Funding includes $50 million each to support the Mitchell E. Daniels, Jr. School of Business&nbsp;and Purdue Computes, both of which were identified last year by Purdue as top&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/president\/strategic-initiatives\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">strategic initiatives<\/a>&nbsp;for the university. Together, these commitments represent the largest gift in the university\u2019s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese transformational grants from Lilly Endowment are historic in both magnitude and vision. Combined, the grants represent the largest gift in university history, injecting crucial momentum to the two intersecting initiatives: the Daniels School of Business and Purdue Computes. Together with Purdue University in Indianapolis \u2014 our first comprehensive urban campus, which opens this July \u2014 these strategic initiatives will further elevate Purdue\u2019s excellence at scale for Indiana\u2019s job creation, workforce brain gain and tech-driven prosperity,\u201d Purdue President Mung Chiang said. \u201cWe are truly grateful for the tremendous support from Lilly Endowment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese new initiatives hold great promise to strategically build connections between business education and the powerful technologies in computing, semiconductors and physical AI and thereby prepare Purdue students for effective leadership in business and other pursuits in a future of rapid technological change,\u201d said N. Clay Robbins, chairman and CEO of Lilly Endowment. \u201cGiven Purdue\u2019s existing strengths in these areas and its scale of impact, along with its commitment to infusing ethical principles throughout its educational programs, Lilly Endowment is most pleased to provide this support.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Daniels School of Business<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Demand for a Purdue business education has never been higher. The new and reimagined Daniels School of Business \u2014 designed to deliver a STEM-infused, data-driven education to prepare tomorrow\u2019s business leaders and entrepreneurs \u2014 enrolled 3,516 students in fall 2023, up more than 1,100 students from five years ago. Applications continue to increase and are up 40% over that same time span.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lilly Endowment funding for the Daniels School, which was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2023\/Q1\/purdues-next-big-move-the-mitchell-e.-daniels,-jr.-school-of-business.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">unveiled as Purdue\u2019s next big move<\/a>&nbsp;in February 2023, will support construction of an approximately 164,000-square-foot building.&nbsp;This new building, which will be connected to the Krannert Building immediately to its east, will give the Daniels School three facilities, joining the Krannert Building and Jerry S. Rawls Hall. All will be connected, both above and below ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Construction, which was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2023\/Q4\/purdue-trustees-approve-daniels-school-building-construction.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">approved by the Purdue Board of Trustees<\/a>&nbsp;in December 2023, is scheduled to begin in July 2024 and be completed in April 2027.&nbsp;The new facility will be the second-largest classroom building on Purdue\u2019s campus, behind only the Wilmeth Active Learning Center.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are thrilled to hear about Lilly Endowment\u2019s contribution to the construction of our new building, which will immediately become a campus centerpiece,\u201d said Jim Bullard, who was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2023\/Q3\/jim-bullard-president-of-st-louis-federal-reserve-bank-appointed-inaugural-dean-at-purdues-daniels-school-of-business.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">appointed as the Daniels School\u2019s inaugural Dr. Samuel R. Allen Dean<\/a>&nbsp;in July 2023.&nbsp;\u201cThis truly represents our next giant leap. We aim to prepare a new generation of business students to tackle the technology-driven challenges of today and tomorrow, and this new building will serve as a representation of our commitment and a beacon for future business leaders.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This commitment from Lilly Endowment follows a $50 million gift from the Dean and Barbara White Family Foundation,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2023\/Q1\/white-family-foundation-commits-50-million-to-new-daniels-school-of-business-at-purdue-university.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced in February 2023<\/a>, which represented the lead gift in the school\u2019s founding and established the Bruce White Undergraduate Institute.<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other major commitments include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>$20 million from Tom Howatt to support the areas of greatest need.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>$10 million from Marshall and Susan Larsen to fund the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/business.purdue.edu\/news\/features\/2023\/marshall-larsen.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Larsen Leaders Academy<\/a>\u00a0in perpetuity, offering impactful experiential learning opportunities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>$10 million from Gerald and Nanette Lyles for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2023\/Q2\/alumnus-and-wife-give-10-million-in-unrestricted-support-to-purdues-new-daniels-school-of-business.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unrestricted support of the school<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>$4 million to name the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2023\/Q1\/raytheon-technologies-commits-4-million-to-purdue-for-named-chair-position-in-new-school-of-business.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Raytheon Technologies Chair<\/a>\u00a0in Integrated Business and Engineering to support faculty leadership, discovery and engagement within business and STEM intersections.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An additional 22 supporters have each contributed $1 million or more.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Purdue Computes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/computes\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Purdue Computes<\/a>, a&nbsp;bold initiative that focuses on computing departments, physical artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors and quantum, will use Lilly Endowment funds to continue its mission to connect faculty and students from across the university and enable it to further advance to the forefront of these sectors and their diverse applications. Initiatives will include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>$20 million for the Birck Nanotechnology Center,\u00a0which houses the state-of-the-art Scifres Nanofabrication Laboratory, one of the largest and most advanced university cleanrooms in the world.\u00a0Renovations will include:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dedicated training bay for students.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Updated cleanroom and laboratory space for advanced microelectronics packaging.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enhanced capabilities for quantum research.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>$20 million to launch the Institute for Physical Artificial Intelligence. With a founding director and interdisciplinary postdoctoral fellows, the institute members will develop innovations that will bring together the bytes of AI and the atoms of \u201cwhat we grow, what we make and what we move\u201d and further integrate physical AI into Indiana\u2019s core economic sectors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>$10 million to increase brain gain in Indiana, with enhanced workforce development efforts in the areas of semiconductors and physical AI. Purdue Computes will expand programs for precollege, college and working professional students that provide on-ramps to careers in semiconductors and a variety of industries, from digital agriculture and advanced manufacturing to digital health and autonomous transportation that utilize AI.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWith Purdue Computes, the university is building on its legacy of leadership in computing and microelectronics to trailblaze technologies that will shape the future, and this gift from Lilly Endowment will make a big difference in helping us achieve our goals,\u201d said Karen Plaut, Purdue executive vice president for research. \u201cThis support is essential to realizing the power of AI and computing in transportation, agriculture, manufacturing, and life and health sciences and creating the workforce for the future that benefits Purdue students, our state and our nation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Business and technology converge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The grants, while given separately and for distinct purposes, will operate together to elevate the university and leverage new investments in Indiana\u2019s economy because the Daniels School and Purdue Computes share the following goals that connect them strategically:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Increasing and improving Indiana\u2019s talent pipeline by recruiting more top students, as well as faculty interested in new research opportunities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Positioning the university to stimulate economic development and prosperity in Indiana by helping the state take full advantage of opportunities in emerging industries, deepening collaborations with Indiana employers and encouraging students to find careers with Indiana-based businesses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Infusing ethical principles throughout all teaching and research activities, remaining mindful of the critical importance of ethics in the ever-evolving world of AI and other advanced technologies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Building on Purdue\u2019s reputation and capacities in key disciplines, especially STEM, where mutually beneficial cross-disciplinary research and teaching opportunities are expected to grow.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStudents joining the workforce must comprehend new technologies, but they must also be familiar with important business concepts such as organizational change, the impacts of change management, workforce transitions and industrial disruption and creation,\u201d said Patrick J. Wolfe, Purdue provost and executive vice president for academic affairs and diversity. \u201cThe Daniels School and Purdue Computes initiatives will collaborate to prepare students who understand how business and technology converge, including in the areas of AI and other advanced technologies, so that they can bring this expertise to their corporate careers.
