{"id":4317,"date":"2024-01-25T15:23:00","date_gmt":"2024-01-25T15:23:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/?p=4317"},"modified":"2024-08-20T12:28:45","modified_gmt":"2024-08-20T16:28:45","slug":"purdue-innovates-licenses-novel-short-stature-corn-technology-to-ag-alumni-seed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/2024\/Q1\/purdue-innovates-licenses-novel-short-stature-corn-technology-to-ag-alumni-seed","title":{"rendered":"Purdue Innovates licenses novel short-stature corn technology to Ag Alumni Seed"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"purdue-initial-words-wrap\"><p class=\"purdue-initial-words wp-block-paragraph\">WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. &mdash;<\/p> \n<p>&nbsp;The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/purdueinnovates.org\/otc\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Purdue Innovates Office of Technology Commercialization<\/a>&nbsp;has issued a worldwide, exclusive license for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ag.purdue.edu\/news\/2023\/08\/purdue-researchers-short-corn-has-far-reaching-potential-for-growers-industry-and-the-environment.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a short-stature corn inbred called D16<\/a>&nbsp;to Romney-based&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.agalumniseed.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ag Alumni Seed<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The license is limited to popcorn and doesn\u2019t apply to dent corn, field corn or sweet corn.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Traditional breeding techniques<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ag Alumni Seed has supported multiple research projects at Purdue University with both financial and in-kind contributions \u2014 such as the use of land, equipment and facilities. Jay Hulbert, the company\u2019s president and CEO, said development of D16 began with research that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ag.purdue.edu\/directory\/gjohal\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Guri Johal<\/a>&nbsp;conducted at the company\u2019s Romney facility a decade ago. Johal is a professor of botany and plant pathology in Purdue University\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ag.purdue.edu\/index.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">College of Agriculture<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cD16 is not a GMO trait. Guri converted multiple elite Ag Alumni Seed proprietary popcorn inbreds to incorporate into D16,\u201d Hulbert said. \u201cThe feature was developed using time-honored traditional breeding techniques without incorporating any foreign DNA into the corn.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Benefits of D16 to farmers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hulbert said a shorter corn plant like D16 has advantages over traditional corn plants.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA shorter plant is less likely than a taller plant to break, fall over or \u2018lodge\u2019 under stress caused by high winds or other severe weather,\u201d he said. \u201cIn a food crop like popcorn, lodging increases the risk of the grain being contaminated by dirt or other foreign materials; D16 may be at lower risk of contamination than traditional corn. In addition, corn can become so tall that it\u2019s difficult for farmers to work in the field except with specialized high-clearance equipment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">D16 may also enhance yield reliability for farmers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShorter-stature corn may improve sustainability by allowing farmers to grow more plants per acre, improving yield and utilizing water and fertilizer more efficiently,\u201d Hulbert said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Developing D16 further\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hulbert outlined Ag Alumni Seed\u2019s next steps with D16.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUsing our Southern Hemisphere facilities, we will fast-track new hybrids with this shorter-stature feature.
