{"id":3608,"date":"2022-05-02T16:02:00","date_gmt":"2022-05-02T16:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/?p=3608"},"modified":"2024-06-24T16:11:26","modified_gmt":"2024-06-24T16:11:26","slug":"purdue-physics-and-astronomy-professor-named-to-american-academy-of-arts-and-sciences","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/2022\/Q2\/purdue-physics-and-astronomy-professor-named-to-american-academy-of-arts-and-sciences","title":{"rendered":"Purdue physics and astronomy professor named to American Academy of Arts and Sciences"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"purdue-initial-words-wrap\"><p class=\"purdue-initial-words\">WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. &mdash;<\/p> \n<p>A Purdue University physics and astronomy professor whose work is dedicated to environmental safety and enhancing renewable energy production has been elected to one of the nation\u2019s highest science honors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Laura Pyrak-Nolte, Distinguished Professor of Physics and Astronomy in the College of Science, has been elected to one of the nation\u2019s oldest and most prestigious honorary societies, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amacad.org\/new-members-2022\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">American Academy of Arts and Sciences<\/a>. Pyrak-Nolte, who is recognized as the world\u2019s leading expert on the acoustic, mechanical and transport characteristics of porous and fractured media, is one of 261 members of the newest academy class.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.physics.purdue.edu\/interactions\/2021\/features\/pyrak_nolte_chatter.php\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Her work in this field<\/a>&nbsp;leads to innovation in the availability of fresh water to drink, the power of geothermal resources to heat and cool our homes, and aids the modern energy economy that relies on the injection and withdrawal of fluids through fracture networks in rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her research has led to novel ways to reveal how seismic waves can be utilized to characterize fractured rock masses and how the fractured medium affects the propagation of seismic waves. She leads the Rock Physics Research Group that studies the physics of fractures in rock, detecting whether they slip or leak fluids into the environment. Understanding fractures is vitally important to a wide range of fields, including improving the safety and efficacy of geothermal energy and natural gas production, carbon sequestration and nuclear waste disposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are enormously proud of Professor&nbsp;Pyrak-Nolte and her scientific achievements,\u201d said Patrick J. Wolfe, the Frederick L. Hovde Dean&nbsp;of the College of Science. &#8220;This latest well-deserved recognition for her work in geophysics is absolutely emblematic of our efforts to elevate Purdue Science to ever-greater heights in research and scholarly impact.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pyrak-Nolte also is an elected&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2021\/Q1\/purdue-celebrates-distinguished-professor-elected-to-the-national-academy-of-engineering.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">member of the National Academy of Engineering<\/a>, a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2020\/Q4\/7-purdue-professors-elected-fellows-of-the-american-association-for-the-advancement-of-science.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fellow in American Association for the Advancement of Science<\/a>, and a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eos.org\/agu-news\/congratulations-to-the-2020-class-of-fellows\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fellow in the American Geophysical Union<\/a>. These allocations recognize Pyrak-Nolte\u2019s distinguished efforts toward advancing scientific applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also holds courtesy appointments in both the Lyles School of Civil Engineering and the Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences at Purdue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am honored to have been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and I want to thank Purdue, the College of Science, and the Department of Physics and Astronomy for their support during my career,\u201d Pyrak-Nolte said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This distinction recognizes achievements of individuals in academia, the arts, business and public affairs. Edwardson Dean Emerita of Engineering.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jay Melosh, Distinguished Professor of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences and Physics.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ei-ichi Negishi, Nobel laureate and the Herbert C. Brown Distinguished Professor emeritus of Chemistry.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Freydoon Shahidi, Distinguished Professor of Mathematics.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Eugene H.
