{"id":3188,"date":"2024-02-15T14:26:00","date_gmt":"2024-02-15T14:26:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/?p=3188"},"modified":"2024-06-20T14:51:30","modified_gmt":"2024-06-20T14:51:30","slug":"farmer-veteran-to-speak-at-2024-agrability-national-training-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/2024\/Q1\/farmer-veteran-to-speak-at-2024-agrability-national-training-workshop","title":{"rendered":"Farmer veteran to speak at 2024 AgrAbility National Training Workshop"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"purdue-initial-words-wrap\"><p class=\"purdue-initial-words wp-block-paragraph\">WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. &mdash;<\/p> \n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.agrability.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">National AgrAbility Project (NAP)<\/a>, headquartered at Purdue University, invites farmers, ranchers and agriculture professionals to the 2024 AgrAbility National Training Workshop in Atlanta, Georgia, to address issues of disability in agriculture.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVeterans represent a significant percentage of AgrAbility clients,\u201d said Paul Jones, project manager of NAP. \u201cThis year\u2019s keynote speaker is Mike Reynolds, a Georgia AgrAbility client who successfully transitioned from the military to farming and founded&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.heroag.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hero Agriculture<\/a>, a nonprofit that helps other veterans find their \u2018next mission\u2019 in agriculture.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deployed to Iraq as a medic in 2009, Reynolds ran the Emergency Response Center at Joint Base Balad. After being wounded in action and sustaining a traumatic brain injury, he was medically discharged from the military and eventually discovered farming as a form of therapy. His organization helps veterans in similar circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conference breakout sessions will cover topics such as farm stress, assistive agriculture technology, and support for veteran and beginning farmers. Attendees will have the opportunity to tour the Shepherd Center, a world-renowned rehabilitation facility; a Kubota Manufacturing plant; a mushroom farm; a sheep farm run by an AgrAbility client who has a spinal cord injury; and a textile factory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conference will take place March 25-28 at the Grand Hyatt Atlanta in Buckhead. Early bird pricing ends Feb. 23, with conference registration ending March 18.
