Work. Play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From an ambitious goal to create an entrepreneurially driven and innovative ecosystem for researchers to work together across disciplines in tackling the grand challenges of our time, Purdue University is taking the next steps to lift that concept to even greater heights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The $1 billion mixed-use development of housing, high-end manufacturing, and industry and research-driven partnerships, called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoveryparkdistrict.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Discovery Park District<\/a> at Purdue, is already an economic and commercial success. (Purdue University photo\/Rebecca McElhoe)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Driving quality jobs, high-tech manufacturing and a central hub for innovation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Discovery Park District at Purdue, a $1 billion mixed-use development embedded into the fabric of the Purdue University campus, highlights the early success of a vision to establish a thriving \u201clive-work-play\u201d community and the impact of university-private-community partnerships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s powered by the hundreds of new jobs supporting aerospace and high-tech industry manufacturing and cutting-edge research facilities; a newly announced microhospital; a planned event venue and additional retail establishments, joining high-end offices; and a multiphase development of townhomes, condominiums, apartments and single-family homes with additional plans for senior-living housing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And there\u2019s much more to come as Purdue and its key local and global partners take the steps to capitalize on the growing national trend for those who want to live, work, play and \u2014 the latest \u2014 retire near a prosperous and progressive university community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPresident Daniels conceived and championed this idea as a way to build the Greater Lafayette economy while making the nearby campus environment exciting and attractive so Purdue can recruit the talent it needs for the future,\u201d said Brian Edelman, president of the Purdue Research Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prf.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Purdue Research Foundation<\/a> is leading the development of the 400-acre district. Already ahead of its 30-year timeline, the district has transformed the west end of the campus into a gateway for intellectual discourse and commercial and industrial collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, $889.5 million worth of public investment and $1.5 billion in private-sector investment flowed into Greater Lafayette from 2015-20, much of that through the Discovery Park District at Purdue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The depth and breadth of the public-private investment project is visible through the progress in the district, which has expanded beyond the State Street Redevelopment Project and the established Discovery Park interdisciplinary research complex of facilities that Purdue launched in 2001.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"449\" src=\"https:\/\/new.www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/dpd-researchLO.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3103\" style=\"width:1000px\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/dpd-researchLO.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/dpd-researchLO-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/dpd-researchLO-768x431.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A cornerstone of Discovery Park District at Purdue is the state-of-the-art research facilities and laboratories that are a part of the university\u2019s multidisciplinary advancements in aerospace and defense, life sciences and animal health, nanotechnology, agriculture-related technology and innovation, alternative energy, cybersecurity, advanced manufacturing and other critical fields. (Purdue University file photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Discovery Park District at Purdue will continue to grow and evolve as corporate partners locate jobs and workers to the area,\u201d Edelman said. \u201cOur job is to make sure the corporations that decide to locate in the Discovery Park District \u2018receive the keys\u2019 to Purdue University, ensuring that all of the research and recruiting interests of the companies are met and met at the speed of business. Additionally, the vision of Discovery Park District at Purdue calls for providing the options for housing, entertainment, health care, education and lifestyle amenities that those workers need.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rolls-Royce, Saab and Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories have brought millions of investment dollars to the district and have taken advantage of Purdue\u2019s engineering and technology expertise. More importantly, they\u2019ve added hundreds of jobs to the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aerospace engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce announced plans in April to grow its already sizable and long-standing investment in the district. Through a $204 million project, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2021\/Q3\/purdue-welcomes-the-largest-economic-development-project-to-west-lafayette-from-rolls-royce-and-invests-in-aerospace-engineering-epicenter.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">United Kingdom-based company will expand<\/a> one building and construct two test facilities, creating 30 jobs that will pay average annual salaries in excess of $90,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rolls-Royce\u2019s plans include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A 60,000-square-foot <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rolls-royce.com\/media\/press-releases\/2021\/02-08-2021-rr-announces-major-testing-facility-expansion-with-purdue-university.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hybrid electric\/controls facility<\/a>. This facility will be added to the Purdue Technology Center Aerospace facility branded with Rolls-Royce\u2019s name between U.S. 231 and Newman Road. It will accelerate the development of hybrid electric technologies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A 23,500-square-foot altitude testing facility that would allow simulation and testing at the altitude of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2021\/Q3\/purdue-welcomes-the-largest-economic-development-project-to-west-lafayette-from-rolls-royce-and-invests-in-aerospace-engineering-epicenter.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">latest-technology aero engines<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A 280,392-square-foot test utility building that would feed air into the altitude test facility and to the planned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2021\/Q3\/national-hypersonic-ground-test-facility-to-be-built-in-purdue-aerospace-district.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hypersonic Ground Test Center<\/a>, which would be hosted by Purdue. Known as HGTC, the massive test center that was announced last August would be the first-of-its-kind facility in the U.S., where a nonprofit consortium of defense industry firms can test in Mach 3.5-5.0 and Mach 4.5-7.5 ranges.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Sweden-based global defense and security company&nbsp;Saab, meanwhile,&nbsp;opened its $37 million manufacturing facility last October near Maurice J. Zucrow Laboratories. Its employment is expected to reach 300 by 2027. The Saab facility, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2019\/Q2\/saabs-global-defense-and-security-company-lands-in-indiana,-to-open-site-near-purdue-university.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first announced in May 2019<\/a>, supports production of the U.S. Air Force\u2019s next-generation Boeing T-X advanced pilot training aircraft, which will be used to train future Air Force pilots for generations to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selinc.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Schweitzer Engineering<\/a> opened its $20 million facility in February 2020 on the west edge of Discovery Park District on U.S. 231. There, 300 employees focus on electric power research and development. The founder of the Pullman, Washington-based company is Purdue electrical engineering alum <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/ECE\/News\/2022\/ece-alumnus-edmund-o-schweitzer-III-to-receive-honorary-doctor-of-engineering\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Edmund O. Schweitzer III<\/a>, who created the first digital protective relay in 1982, revolutionizing the electrical protection industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These industry partnerships also represent major wins for the national security and technology initiative of Purdue\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2021\/Q2\/purdue-launches-next-moves-initiatives.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Next Moves<\/a> in advancing the university\u2019s efforts to become the U.S. epicenter of hypersonics activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And strategically and geographically positioned as a hub for academic and industry partnering in the district is the <a href=\"https:\/\/discoveryparkdistrict.com\/the-convergence-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Convergence Center for Innovation and Collaboration<\/a>, billed as the \u201cbusiness front door to Purdue University.\u201d Convergence has 143,000 square feet of space, including 22,000 square feet of LEED silver-certified flexible office space. (Purdue University photo\/Rebecca McElhoe)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Convergence is now home to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/purduefoundry.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Purdue Foundry<\/a>, which supports Purdue\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2017\/Q4\/purdue-startup-ecosystem-reaches-165th-startup,-230-million,-20043-new-positions-in-four-years.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">growing startup community<\/a>.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prf.org\/otc\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Purdue Office of Technology Commercialization<\/a> and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/partners.purdue.edu\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Purdue\u2019s Office of Corporate and Global Partnerships<\/a>&nbsp;also are housed in Convergence. (Purdue University photo\/Rebecca McElhoe)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tapping into national trend to live, work, play, retire in or near university community<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Discovery Park District at Purdue is a testament to the adage, \u201cIf you build it, they will come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that\u2019s for families, young professionals and retirees excited about living near a university community, the vibrancy of its culture \u2014 and West Lafayette\u2019s No. 8 ranking of the Best College Towns &amp; Cities in America. In compiling its 2022 list, WalletHub gauged 415 communities across three key areas: wallet friendliness, social environment, and academic and economic opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anchoring the district\u2019s residential effort is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2019\/Q2\/residential-village-to-set-center-stage-for-new-urbanist-community-living-in-discovery-park-district.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Provenance<\/a>, led by developer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oldtowndesigngroup.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Old Town Design Group<\/a>&nbsp;of Carmel, Indiana. (Purdue University file photo) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Additionally, the $86 million, 830-bed <a href=\"https:\/\/purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2019\/Q2\/aspire-apartments-incorporate-21st-century-digital-lifestyle-on-purdue-campus.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Aspire at Discovery Park\u00a0District<\/a>, a four-building apartment project that opened in 2019, is fully leased. Purdue trustees <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2022\/Q2\/trustees-approve-resolution-to-acquire-west-lafayette-housing-complex,-new-on-site-clinic-contract-at-purdue-northwest.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced plans<\/a> this month to purchase the property from developer <a href=\"https:\/\/bbcampussolutions.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Balfour Beatty-Walsh Housing LLC<\/a>. Purdue Research Foundation is scheduled to complete the purchase, before transferring the property to Purdue for folding it into its residence halls system. University ownership will require state approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.homeiscontinuum.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Continuum<\/a>, a three-acre, mixed-use apartment and commercial development just west of Convergence, began leasing its 246 luxury one- and two-bedroom apartments as well as 15,000 square feet of street-level commercial space in early 2022. The developer is J.C. Hart Co. of Carmel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Future plans for Provenance include another 125 apartments and approximately 200 more single-family attached and detached homes. Plans also include possible senior housing for retirees as well as a community center, fitness center, restaurants and retail, a centralized greenspace and community gardens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Source, a 57-unit condo complex slated for a corner of Squirrel Park, is currently planned to be completed in 2024 with one-, two- and three-bedroom condos for alumni who now want a place near campus for football weekends and other Purdue events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Purdue\u2019s deep ties to Sonny Beck, chief executive of Beck\u2019s Hybrids \u2014 a family-owned seed company serving the Midwest for over 80 years \u2014 have planted the seed for a novel addition to the district and the Source project. Beck is a Purdue alum and current member of the university\u2019s board of trustees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Beck family donated a 1938 horse barn that will be repurposed as an event venue and possible restaurant at State Street and Airport Road. Purdue, consistently ranked in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2021\/Q3\/u.s.-news-rankings-purdue-again-among-top-10-most-innovative-schools-in-nation.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">top 10 most innovative colleges<\/a>\u00a0in the nation, is the only university to engineer such a future-focused, live-and-work lifestyle for people working remotely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As demand for housing in the live-work-play community is being met, market demand for amenities such as restaurants, retailing and medical services also grows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ascension St. Vincent on May 6&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2022\/Q2\/ascension-st.-vincent-neighborhood-hospital-coming-to-purdue-university-campus.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced it will build a microhospital<\/a>&nbsp;in the district, featuring eight inpatient beds, eight ER treatment rooms, CT imaging, an ambulatory surgery center, and other health care services. With site construction beginning this year at U.S. 231 and Airport Road, the microhospital for the first time puts inpatient and emergency room care within the city of West Lafayette.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Going forward, another key driver for residential and commercial development within the district is the Purdue University Airport.
