Purdue’s School of Nuclear Engineering combines decades of expertise in reactor technology, materials, safety and cybersecurity with a growing portfolio of research on advanced nuclear systems and small modular reactors (SMRs).

A Purdue-led report prepared for the Indiana Office of Energy Development investigated the feasibility of implementing SMRs across Indiana. It also outlined opportunities for the state to address key challenges with the deployment of this technology both within Indiana and nationwide.

Purdue’s research infrastructure provides opportunities for both discovery and hands-on learning. The university operates Purdue University Reactor Number One, Indiana’s only nuclear reactor and the first in the nation with a fully digital safety and control system. The reactor provides opportunities for faculty, staff and students to conduct cutting-edge experiments that could improve reactor technology across the sector.

Purdue is also helping address the workforce and industry needs required to deploy the next generation of nuclear technologies. The School of Nuclear Engineering recently launched the nation’s first online professional credential program focused on SMRs while expanding partnerships with industry, national laboratories and other institutions. Additionally, IEI brings together Purdue faculty, students and partners from industry and government to advance energy research and education and develop practical solutions for abundant, affordable and reliable energy. Its initiatives span nuclear energy, grid modernization, geothermal and natural gas, batteries and energy storage, and critical materials.

Through these strengths in research, education and collaboration, Purdue is helping position Indiana as a national hub for nuclear innovation. The Global Nuclear Energy Economic Summit reflects that momentum, bringing together stakeholders from across the nuclear ecosystem to explore the technologies, partnerships and talent needed to meet growing energy demands while strengthening economic competitiveness.

About Purdue University

Purdue University is a research institution ranked among the top 10 public universities in the United States. More than 111,000 students study at Purdue across multiple campuses, including more than 57,000 at our main campus locations in West Lafayette and Indianapolis.
