{"id":2402,"date":"2024-03-20T19:19:00","date_gmt":"2024-03-20T19:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/?p=2402"},"modified":"2024-08-20T12:21:49","modified_gmt":"2024-08-20T16:21:49","slug":"6-7m-in-federal-grants-awarded-to-develop-tech-to-monitor-treat-chronic-eye-diseases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/2024\/Q1\/6-7m-in-federal-grants-awarded-to-develop-tech-to-monitor-treat-chronic-eye-diseases","title":{"rendered":"$6.7M in federal grants awarded to develop tech to monitor, treat chronic eye diseases"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"purdue-initial-words-wrap\"><p class=\"purdue-initial-words\">WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. &mdash;<\/p> \n<p>Research teams led by a faculty member in Purdue University\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/Engr\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">College of Engineering<\/a>&nbsp;will use two grants from the National Eye Institute totaling $6.7 million to further develop specialized smart soft contact lenses that continuously monitor or treat chronic ocular diseases like glaucoma, corneal neovascularization and dry eye syndromes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/Engr\/People\/ptProfile?resource_id=127246\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chi Hwan Lee<\/a>&nbsp;leads the teams that are developing the patent-pending lenses, which can painlessly deliver therapeutic drugs or accurately measure intraocular pressure, or IOP. IOP is the only known modifiable risk factor for glaucoma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lee is the Leslie A. Geddes Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering in Purdue\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/BME\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering<\/a>. He holds a joint appointment in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/ME\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">School of Mechanical Engineering<\/a>&nbsp;and a courtesy appointment in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/MSE\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">School of Materials Engineering<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other researchers are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/ChE\/people\/ptProfile?id=71151\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bryan Boudouris<\/a>, Purdue\u2019s associate vice president for research in strategic interdisciplinary research and the R. Norris and Eleanor Shreve Professor of Chemical Engineering in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/ChE\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Davidson School of Chemical Engineering<\/a>;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/directory\/person.php?id=1396\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shin Ae Park<\/a>, assistant professor of ophthalmology in Purdue\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">College of Veterinary Medicine<\/a>;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/optometry.iu.edu\/people-directory\/kollbaum-pete.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Kollbaum<\/a>, associate dean for research, director of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/optometry.iu.edu\/research\/borish-center.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Borish Center for Ophthalmic Research<\/a>&nbsp;and professor in Indiana University\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/optometry.iu.edu\/index.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">School of Optometry<\/a>;&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.umich.edu\/dept\/ophthalmology\/yannis-m-paulus-md-facs\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Yannis Paulus<\/a>, associate professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences and biomedical engineering at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uofmhealth.org\/about\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Michigan Medicine<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Team members also included Jinyuan Zhang, a former Purdue postdoctoral student in biomedical engineering and now a health technologies research and development engineer at Apple, and Yumin Dai, a graduate student in the School of Materials Engineering.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWorking on smart soft contact lenses allowed us to engage in top-tier interdisciplinary research, moving beyond theory to craft real-world solutions that aim to transform eye disease treatment,\u201d Dai said. \u201cWe gained hands-on experience in biomedical engineering, materials science and clinical application, equipping us for future healthcare challenges. This project highlights our dedication to merging education with groundbreaking research, ensuring we&#8217;re prepared to make a real impact.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Eye Institute is one of the National Institutes of Health; the funding comes from the NIH Research Project Grant Program, or R01.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The innovation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Lee specializes in StickTronics, which are stickerlike items that contain electronics or smart technology. He develops wearable biomedical devices that continuously monitor and manage chronic diseases or health conditions unobtrusively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some traditional wearable tonometers \u2014 devices that measure pressure inside the eyes \u2014 are equipped with an integrated circuit chip. This increases contact lens thickness and stiffness compared with a typical commercial soft contact lens, in many cases causing discomfort for patients. The research team\u2019s version is different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo address this unmet need, we developed a unique class of smart soft contact lenses built upon various commercial brands of soft contact lenses for continuous 24-hour IOP monitoring and potentially treatment, even during sleep at home,\u201d Lee said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur smart soft contact lenses retain the intrinsic lens features of lens power, biocompatibility, softness, transparency, wettability, oxygen transmissibility and overnight wearability. Having all these features at the same time is crucial to the success of translating the smart soft contact lenses into ocular disease care, but these features are lacking in current devices.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The NEI grants<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Lee said the $6.7 million funding from the two NEI grants will further refine the smart soft contact lenses. Concurrently, clinical trials will be conducted in collaboration with Purdue\u2019s College of Veterinary Medicine, the IU School of Optometry and Michigan Medicine to assess the lenses\u2019 biosafety, usability, functionality, therapeutic effectiveness and durability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith the steadfast support from NEI, the successful completion of these projects will solidify our path toward introducing an innovative, closed-loop system for these smart contact lenses,\u201d Lee said. \u201cThis system will enable simultaneous monitoring and drug delivery for a wide range of chronic ocular diseases.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lee disclosed the smart soft contact lenses innovation to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/purdueinnovates.org\/otc\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Purdue Innovates Office of Technology Commercialization<\/a>, which has applied for a patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to protect the intellectual property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About Purdue University<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Purdue University is a public research institution demonstrating excellence at scale.
