{"id":23367,"date":"2026-09-09T12:51:38","date_gmt":"2026-09-09T16:51:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/?p=23367"},"modified":"2026-09-09T13:04:43","modified_gmt":"2026-09-09T17:04:43","slug":"purdue-lands-spot-among-nations-best-in-2027-college-free-speech-rankings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/2026\/Q3\/purdue-lands-spot-among-nations-best-in-2027-college-free-speech-rankings","title":{"rendered":"Purdue lands spot among nation\u2019s best in 2027 College Free Speech Rankings \u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. \u2014 Purdue University is ranked No. 3 among public universities and No. 7 overall nationally in the 2027 College Free Speech Rankings, a strong rating announced Wednesday (Sept. 9) that affirms the university\u2019s commitment to free and open debate on campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With an overall score that rose to 76.9 from 76.24 last year, Purdue trailed the Georgia Institute of Technology (No. 3) and Michigan Technological University (No. 4) among U.S. public institutions, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/rankings.fire.org\/\">survey released by College Pulse and the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, known as FIRE<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The score is the sum of 12 components, including six measures from student perceptions, three assessing campus speech policies and three evaluating how schools respond to speech controversies. The report said more than 63,000 students were surveyed from 262 colleges and universities nationwide, including 312 Boilermaker students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Purdue also continues to be recognized for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/home\/free-speech-overview\/\">adopting and adhering to what is now known as the \u201cChicago Statement of Principles,\u201d<\/a> as well as its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/home\/freedom-of-expression-and-use-of-university-facilities\/\">stance of institutional neutrality<\/a>. In 2015, Purdue became the first public university \u2014 and the second overall \u2014 to back the statement of principles of the more than 100 U.S. colleges that have since followed the University of Chicago\u2019s lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And Purdue&nbsp;was the first major university to incorporate a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CNYsqAe0lx0&amp;t=2s\">free-speech presentation<\/a> into&nbsp;its fall semester&nbsp;orientation program, called&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/studentsuccess\/orientation\/bgr\/\">Boiler Gold Rush<\/a>, for all incoming students. That&nbsp;session&nbsp;was added in 2016 and continues every August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPurdue\u2019s long-standing commitment to freedom of expression and the robust free speech culture it engenders is one of our greatest strengths and shared values,\u201d\u00a0said Purdue Provost Patrick Wolfe. \u201cDialogue and debate are critical to scholarly inquiry,\u00a0no less than\u00a0to civic life, and a central responsibility of universities like ours in constitutional democracies\u00a0is to protect and foster an environment that supports free, robust and uninhibited debate and exchange of ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 2027 report, titled \u201cWhat Is the State of Free Speech on American Campuses,\u201d marks the seventh consecutive year that FIRE and College Pulse have surveyed college undergraduates about their perceptions and experiences regarding free speech on their campuses.
