WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. \u2014 Purdue University officials, students and stakeholders gathered Friday (Aug. 7) to cut the ribbon and dedicate South Hall, the university\u2019s newest residential facility. The $149 million project adds 896 student beds to Purdue\u2019s West Lafayette residential footprint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The inaugural group of residents will start moving into the new hall next week. This fall, more than 18,500 new and returning students will live in Purdue University Residences in West Lafayette and Indianapolis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The eight-story, 252,500-square-foot residence hall, located on MacArthur Drive between Hillenbrand and Harrison halls, was constructed to meet the growing demand for on-campus housing, which was driven in part by Purdue\u2019s record enrollment over the past five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the completion of South Hall and last August\u2019s opening of the 3rd & West apartment complex<\/a>, the university has added 1,900 new beds to its West Lafayette on\u2011campus housing capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs Purdue continues to see record enrollment, we remain deeply committed to meeting the growing demand for vibrant, supportive and accessible on\u2011campus housing,\u201d said Beth McCuskey, Purdue\u2019s vice provost for student life. \u201cExpanding our residential portfolio reflects our ongoing effort to ensure students have the community, convenience and academic support that come with living at the heart of campus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Purdue Board of Trustees approved<\/a> the construction project in August 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

South Hall offers a mix of single-, double-, triple- and quad-occupancy rooms. It connects directly to the newly renovated and expanded Hillenbrand Dining Court and features commercial restaurant space on the main floor. The building\u2019s community spaces include ground-floor lounges, community kitchens, a recreation and gaming area, and a first-floor laundry facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The residential floors feature study spaces, music practice rooms and other communal gathering areas that encourage connection and collaboration among the students who live there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond expanding residential capacity, South Hall was specifically designed to foster academic collaboration as the home of The Data Mine<\/a>, a research-based living and learning community created to introduce students to data science concepts and equip them to create solutions to real-world problems. More than 700 first-year students are expected to reside in the living community during the 2026-27 academic year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTo prepare our students for a world increasingly shaped by data and artificial intelligence, we need to provide spaces that foster constant collaboration and innovation,\u201d said Lucy Flesch, the Frederick L. Hovde Dean of the College of Science. \u201cSouth Hall allows members of The Data Mine to bring their academic pursuits home, creating a 24\/7 environment where students from every discipline learn to think critically and develop highly sought-after skills, support one another, and prepare to lead in their fields in a rapidly changing world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Data Mine is an interdisciplinary learning community that prepares students to use data, artificial intelligence and emerging technologies to solve complex problems. Open to students from all majors, the program requires no prior technical background and provides opportunities to develop practical skills through hands-on collaboration with industry, faculty and peers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hall will also introduce an automated package locker system, the first of its kind within University Residences, allowing residents of both South Hall and Hillenbrand Hall to access mail and packages 24 hours a day, seven days a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
