INDIANAPOLIS \u2014 Purdue University and the Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library (KVML) announced the university\u2019s acquisition of the facility at 543 Indiana Ave. on the historic 500 block of Indiana Avenue, directly across from the Madam Walker Legacy Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The acquisition further enhances the collaborative relationship between Purdue and KVML, which will lead to increased Purdue student programming inside the 10,400-square-foot building. Those opportunities include academic presentations, workshops, tutoring and cooperative events that bring together Boilermakers and community members while creating new ways for KVML visitors to engage with Vonnegut\u2019s literary legacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe have been engaged with the Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library ever since we launched in Indianapolis, and this further enhances our relationship,\u201d said Evan Hawkins, Purdue\u2019s executive director of Administrative Operations in Indianapolis. \u201cAs Purdue assumes ownership and stewardship of this facility, we will work together to expand educational programming while deepening student experiences and promoting greater community engagement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Those student experiences have included an ongoing project between KVML and Purdue\u2019s EPICS program<\/a>, a service-learning design program through the College of Engineering, as well as a special literary event led by Brian Leung, professor of English at Purdue<\/a>, and hosted by the College of Liberal Arts at the museum last spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cFrom the beginning of the organization, we believed that one of the best ways to honor Kurt Vonnegut\u2019s legacy was to fill this building with students,\u201d said Julia Whitehead, founder and CEO of the KVML. \u201cFor many years, Purdue students have been learning, creating and collaborating with us in this space. Today\u2019s announcement allows us to build on that success and ensure that future generations will continue to engage with Vonnegut\u2019s legacy in meaningful ways.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n KVML will continue to house the museum, which since 2019 has been located inside the three-story facility. The museum has served as a destination for visitors, students, scholars and neighbors seeking to explore the life, work and impact of Vonnegut \u2014 an acclaimed World War II veteran and prisoner of war, writer, artist, teacher, and Indianapolis native.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cOur board of directors has spent a year going through the strategic planning process. This is an important step forward for us and we couldn\u2019t be more excited about the future,\u201d said John Barth, KVML board co-chair and Indianapolis city-county councilor. \u201cInstead of dedicating substantial resources to long-term building maintenance and capital expenses, we can invest more in our mission of educating students, veterans, teachers and the general public about Vonnegut\u2019s views of civic life and the role of the arts in improving lives,\u201d said Lisa McKinney, attorney and KVML board member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n After launching an expansion location two years ago, Purdue\u2019s physical presence in Indianapolis has continued to broaden, creating student gathering spaces outside of residences and classroom buildings. This creates unique opportunities for connection between students and entities in Indianapolis, like KVML, which are ingrained in downtown\u2019s vibrant culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The acquisition of 543 Indiana Ave. aligns with the campus master plan for Indianapolis<\/a>, which was introduced in June 2025 and provides a 50-year framework for development. The purchase and sale agreement was executed earlier this summer, with closing anticipated this fall. Terms of the sale will remain undisclosed until the transaction closes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As its downtown presence grows, Purdue is continuing to work and engage with several neighborhood partners, including the Indiana Avenue Historic District, to ensure collaboration and a shared vision that benefits neighbors and the surrounding community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Purdue University is a research institution ranked among the top 10 public universities in the United States.
