{"id":22196,"date":"2026-06-22T09:47:24","date_gmt":"2026-06-22T13:47:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/?p=22196"},"modified":"2026-06-22T10:05:42","modified_gmt":"2026-06-22T14:05:42","slug":"purdue-engineers-test-validate-novel-method-to-improve-pharmaceutical-rd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/2026\/Q2\/purdue-engineers-test-validate-novel-method-to-improve-pharmaceutical-rd","title":{"rendered":"Purdue engineers test, validate novel method to improve pharmaceutical R&amp;D"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. \u2014 A patent-pending innovation created and validated in Purdue University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/Engr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">College of Engineering<\/a> could strengthen pharmaceutical research and development in the areas of batch verification, encapsulation efficiency screening and regulatory compliance workflows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mechanical engineering professor <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/ME\/People\/ptProfile?resource_id=110641&amp;group_id=277631\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arezoo Ardekani<\/a> and her doctoral student Kaeul Lim have leveraged hyperspectral imaging (HSI) and machine learning (ML) to develop a novel, label-free and noninvasive method to characterize nanoparticles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The method enables robust, scalable classification of liposomal drug carriers and lipid nanoparticles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt provides real-time, nondestructive quality control during nanoparticle formulation and manufacturing,\u201d Ardekani said. \u201cDue to its noninvasive nature, it can be adapted into industrial high-throughput analytical platforms.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ardekani said the Purdue method\u2019s classification accuracy for nanoparticle type approached 99% under optimal parameter conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ardekani\u2019s research was published in the peer-reviewed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0378517325009020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">International Journal of Pharmaceutics<\/a>. She disclosed the innovation to the <a href=\"https:\/\/purdueinnovates.org\/otc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Purdue Innovates Office of Technology Commercialization<\/a>, which applied for a patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to protect the intellectual property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Industry partners interested in developing or commercializing the system should contact Dipak Narula, lead technology development liaison and assistant director of business development and licensing \u2014 physical sciences, at <a href=\"mailto:dnarula@prf.org\">dnarula@prf.org<\/a> about track code 70462.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Challenges of traditional analytical methods<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ardekani said label-free characterization of nanoscale drug-delivery systems remains a critical challenge in pharmaceutical research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTraditional analytical methods are labor-intensive, low-throughput or require labeling, which can interfere with nanoparticle functionality,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Purdue method focuses on enhancing image quality within HSI data. Ardekani said its ML capabilities significantly reduce classification complexity and improve overall accuracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTraditionally, HSI\u2019s application to nanoparticle analysis is limited,\u201d she said. \u201cData is often lost to noise and overlapping information.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How the Purdue method works<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Liposomal formulations are deposited onto precleaned glass microscope slides and imaged without further modification or staining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe HSI system captures scattered light spectra from a sample through line-by-line spatial scanning, where each pixel\u2019s information represents the spectrum at that location,\u201d Ardekani said. \u201cHyperspectral images are recorded by using an enhanced dark field illumination system attached to a microscope.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ardekani said following the image preprocessing phase, classification is performed using convolutional neural networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe convolutional layers learn important features from the hyperspectral data,\u201d she said. \u201cThose features are then passed through the fully connected layer and the output layer to classify the nanoparticles.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Funding milestones and next development steps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ardekani\u2019s research has been supported with funding from the Center for Bioanalytic Metrology, which is a partnership among&nbsp;Indiana University,&nbsp;Purdue University and the&nbsp;University of Notre Dame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ardekani said the next steps to prepare the innovation for the marketplace are applying the technology to a broader range of samples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About Purdue Innovates Office of Technology Commercialization<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpurdueinnovates.org%2Fotc&amp;data=05%7C02%7Cbdspauld%40purdue.edu%7Cf3263ae99fc74eea4e4608de6efbe76d%7C4130bd397c53419cb1e58758d6d63f21%7C1%7C0%7C639070225405736193%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=IRrtWs3jM%2Fpnak1g%2Fxd770Tm5rswoQigTemuOUtQs%2BY%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Purdue Innovates Office of Technology Commercialization<\/a>&nbsp;operates one of the most comprehensive technology transfer programs among leading research universities in the U.S. Services provided by this office support the economic development initiatives of Purdue University and benefit the university\u2019s academic activities through commercializing, licensing and protecting Purdue intellectual property.
