{"id":2213,"date":"2023-10-06T12:29:00","date_gmt":"2023-10-06T12:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/?p=2213"},"modified":"2024-06-10T12:32:33","modified_gmt":"2024-06-10T12:32:33","slug":"trustees-approve-chiangs-performance-metrics-for-2023-24","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/2023\/Q4\/trustees-approve-chiangs-performance-metrics-for-2023-24","title":{"rendered":"Trustees approve Chiang\u2019s performance metrics for 2023-24"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"purdue-initial-words-wrap\"><p class=\"purdue-initial-words wp-block-paragraph\">WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. &mdash;<\/p> \n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Purdue University<\/a>\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/bot\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Board of Trustees<\/a>&nbsp;on Friday (Oct. 6) approved the metrics on which President Mung Chiang\u2019s performance will be measured for the 2023-24 fiscal year, the first performance metrics of his presidency.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goals and metrics will be annually reviewed and revised by the board, as they were for Chiang\u2019s predecessor, Mitch Daniels, and will define and measure progress in five priority areas, according to trustee Malcolm DeKryger, chair of the board\u2019s Compensation Committee, which recommended the metrics for board approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur university continues to make giant leaps forward in all aspects, thanks to our outstanding faculty, staff and students, led by an administration that sees opportunity at every corner,\u201d DeKryger said. \u201cWe continue to set high goals to ensure our university remains at the top of institutions of higher education to the benefit of our students, our state and our world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Upon his selection as Purdue\u2019s 13th president, Chiang requested his contract follow the same structure as Daniels\u2019 before him, with a substantial portion of the pay being at risk and determined based on annual performance, and that his starting base salary be less than Daniels\u2019 and less than his then-base salary as faculty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Metrics will measure progress for 2023-24 in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Financial success (18%): Factors include a favorable operating budget, fundraising dollars and number of donors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Student success (32%): Factors include starting salary of graduates, four- and six-year graduation rates, success of programs such as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/business.purdue.edu\/centers\/bop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Cornell A. Bell Business Opportunity Program<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/mep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Minority Engineering Program<\/a>, percentage of Pell Grant recipients in undergraduate enrollment, systemwide number of graduates of all degrees, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/discover.online.purdue.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Purdue University Online<\/a>\u00a0enrollment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Research (20%): Factors include external research funding amount, number of active industry partners, number of patents filed, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pari.purdue.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Purdue Applied Research Institute<\/a>\u00a0operational and facility readiness.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reputation (10%): Factors include the composite of three national rankings \u2014 U.S. News &amp; World Report undergraduate rankings and the U.S. portion of QS and Times Higher Education rankings \u2014 and the number of earned media placements.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>University initiatives (20%): Factors include\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/campuses\/indianapolis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Purdue University in Indianapolis<\/a>\u00a0transition readiness,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/business.purdue.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mitchell E.
