{"id":2087,"date":"2023-03-14T18:35:00","date_gmt":"2023-03-14T18:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/?p=2087"},"modified":"2024-06-07T18:39:39","modified_gmt":"2024-06-07T18:39:39","slug":"purdues-worlds-whitest-paint-wins-2023-sxsw-innovation-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/2023\/Q1\/purdues-worlds-whitest-paint-wins-2023-sxsw-innovation-award","title":{"rendered":"Purdue\u2019s \u2018world\u2019s whitest paint\u2019 wins 2023 SXSW Innovation Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"purdue-initial-words-wrap\"><p class=\"purdue-initial-words\">WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. &mdash;<\/p> \n<p>The world\u2019s whitest paint, developed by Purdue University researchers and recognized in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2021\/Q3\/purdue-record-for-the-whitest-paint-appears-in-latest-edition-of-guinness-world-records.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Guinness World Records<\/a>, has been named winner of the 2023 Innovation Award in the sustainability category by South by Southwest Conference &amp; Festivals (SXSW).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The award \u201crecognizes the most exciting creative developments in the connected world,\u201d and was presented to Purdue on Monday (March 13) at the 25th annual SXSW Innovation Awards Ceremony in Austin, Texas. Purdue was chosen in the sustainability category from among four finalists that included Purdue; Indianapolis-based Atarraya: Sustainable Shrimp-Farming Tech; The Trees of the Future, based in Hayward, California; and Chicago-based Natures Fynd: Fy Protein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The paint, developed by Purdue professor of mechanical engineering\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/ME\/People\/ptProfile?resource_id=29343&amp;_ga=2.127304196.800002037.1678708928-750611840.1660738830\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Xiulin Ruan<\/a>, is fighting global warming by keeping surfaces cool enough to reduce the need for internal air conditioning. SXSW is the latest to recognize the innovation, which was previously featured on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/show\/can-the-worlds-whitest-paint-save-the-world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PBS NewsHour<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=i4ufTAS0ZCg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Late Show With Stephen Colbert<\/a>. Earlier this month, the paint was named winner of the 2023\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/whitest-paint-reflects-light-cools-buildings-nanotech-1850108248?utm_campaign=Gizmodo&amp;utm_content=Giz-+Special+Editions&amp;utm_medium=SocialMarketing&amp;utm_source=twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gizmodo Science Fair<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"451\" src=\"https:\/\/new.www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/ruan-sxswLO.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2090\" style=\"width:1000px;height:auto\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/ruan-sxswLO.jpeg 800w, https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/ruan-sxswLO-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/ruan-sxswLO-768x433.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Professor Xiulin Ruan presents to SXSW attendees in Austin, Texas during the Innovation Awards Finalist Showcase. (Purdue University\/Christy McCarter)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2022 Ruan and his team innovated further by developing a new formulation of his groundbreaking paint that is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2022\/Q4\/worlds-whitest-paint-now-thinner-than-ever,-ideal-for-vehicles.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">now thinner and lighter<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 ideal for radiating heat away from cars, trains, airplanes and even spacecraft.&nbsp;According to Ruan and his team\u2019s models, covering 1% of the Earth\u2019s surface in their technology could mitigate the total effects of global warming, a fact encouraging them to continue pursuing formulas suitable for surfaces like asphalt and roadways (<a href=\"https:\/\/stories.purdue.edu\/podcast\/purdues-whitest-paint-appears-in-guinness-world-records\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">podcast available online<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith this award, we are honored that SXSW joins a growing list of organizations, publications, and states that recognize Purdue University and its world-changing researchers are delivering practical solutions to today\u2019s toughest challenges,\u201d said R. Ethan Braden, executive vice president, chief marketing and communications officer for Purdue&nbsp;University and Purdue Global. \u201cWhether it\u2019s the world\u2019s whitest paint to combat global warming or the workforce needed to onshore semiconductor production in the United States, Boilermakers are delivering innovative giant leaps again and again.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Painting the town white to go green<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Typical commercial white paint gets warmer rather than cooler when subjected to sunlight or other light sources. Paints on the market that are designed to reject heat reflect only 80% to 90% of sunlight and can\u2019t make surfaces cooler than their surroundings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In comparison, the world\u2019s whitest paint reflects 98.1% of solar heat away from its surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because the paint absorbs less heat from the sun than it emits, a surface coated with this paint is cooled below the surrounding temperature without consuming power.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using this formulation to cover a roof area of about 1,000 square feet could result in a cooling power of 10 kilowatts, more powerful than the air conditioners used by most houses.&nbsp;At SXSW, researchers demonstrated the effects of the difference with two model barns sitting under direct halogen lights: one painted in commercial paint and one in Purdue\u2019s white paint. Judges were able to compare thermometers reading the barns\u2019 internal temperatures and to feel the difference in the roofs. The barn painted in Purdue\u2019s technology consistently held cooler internal temperatures by 8-10 degrees Fahrenheit. The \u201cwhitest white\u201d barn roof was also much cooler to the touch, prompting many surprised responses from judges and viewers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Ruan\u2019s original paint formula is massively efficient, it required&nbsp;a layer 0.4 millimeters thick to achieve subambient radiant cooling. The newer, thinner formulation can achieve similar cooling with a layer just 0.15 millimeters thick.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new paint also incorporates voids of air, which make it highly porous. This lower density, together with the thinness, provides another huge benefit: reduced weight. The newer paint weighs 80% less than the original paint yet achieves nearly identical solar reflectance \u2013 97.9%, compared to the original formula\u2019s 98.1%.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ruan and his team of researchers are currently working with the Purdue Research Foundation\u2019s Office of Technology Commercialization for commercialization.&nbsp; According to Ruan, \u201cWe are in discussions right now to commercialize it.
