Morrill Dean of Purdue\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cla.purdue.edu\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">College of Liberal Arts<\/a>, will moderate the talk with Bhattacharya, who took the helm as 18th director of the federal agency in April. Titled \u201cLiberty as an Engine for Science,\u201d the discussion is at 2-2:50 p.m.\u00a0Wednesday in Stewart Center\u2019s Fowler Hall. The talk is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Purdue students who attend the Bhattacharya event, because of its connection with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/campaigns\/america250\/\">Purdue America250 celebration<\/a>, will be eligible to receive an event activity credit for their Cornerstone class and university Civics Literacy requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/about-nih\/nih-director\">Bhattacharya<\/a>, a renowned medical doctor, researcher and health economist, was nominated by President Donald Trump to lead the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/\">NIH<\/a> and confirmed by the U.S. Senate&nbsp;last March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The NIH\u2019s mission is to seek fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that knowledge to enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce illness and disability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bhattacharya, who\u2019s known as \u201cDr. Jay,\u201d previously held a tenured professorship in the medical school at Stanford University in California. His research focused on population aging and chronic disease, particularly on the health and well-being of vulnerable populations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before joining Stanford, he was an economist at RAND and worked as a visiting economics professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. Bhattacharya earned bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s degrees in economics from Stanford. He then completed medical school and earned a PhD in economics, also from Stanford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In December, Yeomans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/2025\/Q4\/yeomans-selected-as-next-dean-of-purdues-college-of-liberal-arts\/\">was selected as Purdue\u2019s new CLA dean<\/a>. He had served as head of Purdue\u2019s Department of Philosophy since 2017 and as a faculty member since 2009.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fireside chat with Bhattacharya will be the first of three Purdue campus events this month focused on the essential role of free inquiry in society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In conjunction with Purdue\u2019s America250 celebration, bestselling writer, documentarian and television producer Timothy Ferris will join President Mung Chiang for a Presidential Lecture Series conversation focused on the pivotal role of science in advancing democracy and economic development. That event, titled \u201cThe Science of Liberty: How Liberalism Arose From Science and Sparks Prosperity,\u201d is at 6 p.m. Feb. 26 in Fowler Hall.
