{"id":1760,"date":"2023-03-02T16:43:00","date_gmt":"2023-03-02T16:43:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/?p=1760"},"modified":"2024-06-06T16:47:43","modified_gmt":"2024-06-06T16:47:43","slug":"purdue-university-named-no-16-among-worlds-most-innovative-companies-no-1-in-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/2023\/Q1\/purdue-university-named-no-16-among-worlds-most-innovative-companies-no-1-in-education","title":{"rendered":"Purdue University named No. 16 among World\u2019s Most Innovative Companies, No. 1 in education"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"purdue-initial-words-wrap\"><p class=\"purdue-initial-words wp-block-paragraph\">WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. &mdash;<\/p> \n<p>Purdue University, for the first time, has been named one of the World\u2019s Most Innovative Companies \u2013 coming in at No. 16 overall and No. 1 in education \u2013 for its advances in the vital field of semiconductors and microelectronics.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The only university among Fast Company magazine\u2019s prestigious&nbsp;<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/most-innovative-companies\/list\">Top 50 Most Innovative Companies<\/a>, No. 16 Purdue follows OpenAI (at No. 1, developer of ChatGPT and Dall-E) and leads NASA (No. 17) and&nbsp;The Walt Disney Company (No. 25) as organizations \u201cpaving the way for the innovations of tomorrow\u201d and \u201csetting the standard with some of the greatest accomplishments of the modern world.\u201d Overall, the list acknowledges 540 organizations across 54 categories and regions around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fast Company&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90850198\/purdue-university-filling-need-for-us-semiconductor-engineers\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cited Purdue<\/a>&nbsp;as a renowned and globally recognized leader in developing a robust and comprehensive program addressing semiconductors through their life cycle from research to training to fabrication to the workforce. The tiny electronics that power almost everything with an \u201con\u201d switch \u2013 and the workforce that keeps them functioning \u2013 are vital to almost every industry and product on Fast Company\u2019s list, from NASA\u2019s telescopes&nbsp;to Disney\u2019s animatronic princesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWithout chips today, it would be like living in the 1940s,\u201d said&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/Engr\/AboutUs\/MeetDean\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Lundstrom,<\/a>&nbsp;senior advisor to the Purdue president and the university\u2019s chief semiconductor officer. \u201cChips are the most sophisticated technology that human beings produce, and it takes a highly educated workforce to manufacture them. Purdue is responding with&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/semiconductors\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">innovation and initiative to prepare the industry\u2019s next generation<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By 2027 the nation will need a minimum of 50,000 trained semiconductor engineers to meet an accelerating demand for the tiny electronic devices that put the \u201csmart\u201d into our smartphones, cars and medical devices \u2013 not to mention our nation\u2019s military and defense technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Purdue answered the call by launching the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2022\/Q2\/purdue-launches-nations-first-comprehensive-semiconductor-degrees-program.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Semiconductor Degrees Program<\/a>, a suite of degrees and credentials to enable a quick ramp-up of in-demand skilled talent and create the next generation of semiconductor experts and personnel to reassert American preeminence in this critical industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe graduates from these programs \u2013 from PhDs to associate degree-holders \u2013 will be at the forefront of innovation as we revitalize American manufacturing,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2022\/Q3\/secretaries-of-state,-commerce-discuss-efforts-to-build-a-u.s-microelectronics-ecosystem.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said Gina M. Raimondo<\/a>, U.S. Secretary of Commerce, during a 2022 tour of campus research facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<lite-youtube class=\"youtube-lite\" videoid=\"ADKh62okEEI\" params=\"rel=0\"><\/lite-youtube>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ADKh62okEEI\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Purdue innovation<\/a>&nbsp;is helping lead the way in addressing this world issue. Not only is Purdue\u2019s Semiconductor Degrees Program the only large-scale, interdisciplinary semiconductor degree program available in the United States, but it also touts a number of features not found in any other educational program. This includes a host of collaborative opportunities, such as the Department of Defense\u2019s microelectronics workforce development initiative,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/research.purdue.edu\/scale\/?_ga=2.258837258.1408465430.1652986842-1000239149.1652542955\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SCALE<\/a>&nbsp;(Scalable Asymmetric Lifecycle Engagement).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SCALE, headed by Purdue\u2019s College of Engineering, brings together faculty from 16 other universities and experts from 34 additional industry partners \u2013 including the Department of Defense, NASA and the Department of Energy\u2019s National Nuclear Security Administration \u2013 to give students access to internships, careers and cutting-edge research opportunities in semiconductors.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The federally funded $30 million SCALE program will increase potential enrollment from 200 to 1,000 students, increasing access and allowing development of a K-12 learning model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Purdue has also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2022\/Q2\/purdue,-ivy-tech-partner-on-next-generation-microelectronics-workforce.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">partnered with Ivy Tech Community College<\/a>, the nation\u2019s largest singly accredited statewide community college system, to develop industry-driven credentials and experience programs.&nbsp;The collaboration brings Purdue\u2019s resources to populations that may not have had access to this type of program while upskilling a motivated workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Investments in the future of the workforce have also drawn innovative neighbors to Purdue. U.S.-owned semiconductor manufacturer SkyWater Technology and Taiwan\u2019s MediaTek Inc., the world\u2019s fourth-largest chip designer by revenue, have each announced partnerships with Purdue in the last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SkyWater plans to open a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2022\/Q3\/skywater-technology-chooses-discovery-park-district-at-purdue-for-1.8b-semiconductor-fabrication-facility,-to-create-750-jobs-in-5-years.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$1.8 billion state-of-the-art semiconductor manufacturing facility<\/a>&nbsp;in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoveryparkdistrict.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Discovery Park District at Purdue<\/a>, a 400-acre, mixed-use development adjacent to campus. This will provide investing companies access to both Purdue University faculty experts and highly sought-after graduates prepared to work in the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Building the company\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2022\/Q2\/purdue-university-partners-with-leading-global-chipmaker-on-midwests-first-semiconductor-design-center.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first semiconductor chip design center in the Midwest<\/a>, and the first to be housed directly on a university campus, MediaTek Inc. will provide an opportunity for students to complete their engineering education and contribute directly to product design and solutions for a global team.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Purdue has been named a Fast Company&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2022\/Q4\/fast-company-chooses-purdue-university-as-a-brand-that-matters-for-second-year-in-a-row.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brand That Matters<\/a>&nbsp;for two years in a row \u2013 the only university on the list both years. The annual designation honors organizations for communicating their brand\u2019s mission and ideals with intention and authenticity. Purdue also has enjoyed five consecutive years as a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2022\/Q3\/purdues-most-innovative-status-reaches-5-years-in-u.s.-news-38-world-report-rankings.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">top 10 Most Innovative university<\/a>&nbsp;as designated by U.S. News &amp; World Report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the now-iconic tuition freeze, which is entering its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2023\/Q1\/purdue-trustees-endorse-12th-consecutive-tuition-freeze.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">12th consecutive year<\/a>, Purdue was named the country\u2019s No. 4&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2022\/Q3\/purdue-ranked-no.-4-most-trusted-public-university-in-the-u.s..html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">most trusted public university<\/a>&nbsp;by Morning Consult and is recognized as a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2021\/Q3\/purdue-again-among-nations-best-in-the-wall-street-journaltimes-higher-ed-ranking.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">top 10 public university<\/a>&nbsp;by The Wall Street Journal\/Times Higher Education.
