{"id":14971,"date":"2025-05-01T06:46:08","date_gmt":"2025-05-01T10:46:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/?p=14971"},"modified":"2025-05-01T09:53:08","modified_gmt":"2025-05-01T13:53:08","slug":"purdue-university-celebrates-record-breaking-participation-on-12th-purdue-day-of-giving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/2025\/Q2\/purdue-university-celebrates-record-breaking-participation-on-12th-purdue-day-of-giving","title":{"rendered":"Purdue University celebrates record-breaking participation on 12th Purdue Day of Giving"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<lite-youtube class=\"youtube-lite\" videoid=\"rDV6BKsqPyw\" params=\"rel=0\"><\/lite-youtube>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. \u2014 After celebrating a record number of gifts during its 12th annual Day of Giving on Wednesday (April 30), Purdue University continues to set the standard for single-day fundraising in American higher education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Boilermakers around the globe were encouraged to \u201cgive back to the Old Gold and Black\u201d throughout the 24-hour online, social media-driven fundraising effort, and their collective contributions brought in $105.1 million through 36,875 gifts for the university \u2014 bringing Purdue Day of Giving\u2019s cumulative total since its launch in 2014 to $602.1 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToday, we are celebrating another successful Purdue Day of Giving and the sense of unity and pride it brings to Boilermakers around the globe, with the special momentum of announcing the Campaign Steering Committee,\u201d said Purdue President Mung Chiang. \u201cI am excited to continue the tradition of running with students around campus. To everyone who shared their resources and their school spirit: You are the heroes who will make victories possible for the next chapter of the university\u2019s legacy. It is your generosity that helps us support students and colleagues, strengthens our global reputation of excellence at scale, and advances the university\u2019s strategic initiatives, especially in One Health-related areas in this year\u2019s Day of Giving. The number of gifts is a new record, reflecting the enthusiastic support from alumni, staff and students.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Purdue Day of Giving encompasses all the university\u2019s locations \u2014 Purdue\u2019s main campus (West Lafayette, Indianapolis and online), Purdue Fort Wayne, Purdue Northwest and Purdue Global. In addition to the money raised from donors, participating programs competed for cash prizes through more than 30 different challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All gifts on Purdue Day of Giving are donor-directed, meaning donors choose the areas and initiatives that receive their support. (Purdue for Life Foundation photo\/Gerry Robi\u00f1os)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Gifts came in from all 50 states and ranged from $10 to $20 million, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/2025\/Q2\/blazing-a-new-trail-for-early-stage-innovation-purdue-announces-creation-of-low-institute-for-therapeutics-lift-through-a-generous-gift-by-phil-low\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$20 million<\/a> from Philip Low,&nbsp;Purdue\u2019s Ralph C. Corley Distinguished Professor of Chemistry, and&nbsp;his wife, Joan, supporting the creation of the Low Institute for Therapeutics, which will work toward accelerating lifesaving therapeutics from the lab into the world<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/2025\/Q2\/alumnus-and-wife-commit-20-million-to-expand-research-efforts-in-purdues-college-of-pharmacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$20 million<\/a> from Greg (BS pharmacy \u201999) and Amy Baker supporting research in the College of Pharmacy and the university\u2019s One Health initiative<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/2025\/Q2\/university-receives-8-million-commitment-from-alumni-couple-in-support-of-daniels-school\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$8 million<\/a> from Sam (BS management \u201975, HDR management \u201917) and Marsha Allen (BS health and human sciences \u201975) supporting the Mitch Daniels School of Business, including $5 million to name a new laboratory within the school and $3 million to name the directorship of the Brock-Wilson Center for Women in Business<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/2025\/Q2\/downing-charitable-trust-commits-5-million-to-support-new-purdue-extension-endowment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$5 million<\/a> from the Jean and Bernas Downing Charitable Trust supporting Purdue Extension to establish the Downing Endowment for Community Vitality<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>$1.49 million from Michael Humnicky (BS physics \u201970, BS management \u201971) supporting Purdue Libraries and School of Information Studies, the College of Science, and study-abroad initiatives<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>$300,000 from Cynthia (BA English \u201972) and William Smith III (BSCHE \u201969) supporting the Purdue Military Research Institute and an additional $40,000 to support graduate student research into rare earth metals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A leadership gift from Barry Odom, Purdue head football coach, and his wife, Tia, supporting various campus partners<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>$2,500 from Cheryl (MS youth development and agricultural education \u201981) and Kemal Altinkemer, including $1,000 to support the Center for Families within the College of Health and Human Sciences<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>$600 from Julie Bowman (BA French teaching \u201973) supporting study-abroad scholarships within the College of Liberal Arts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>$15 from Ishita Mukadam, a freshman in the College of Engineering, supporting Engineers Without Borders at Purdue in Indianapolis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Continuing his tradition, President Chiang led dozens of students in a run through campus \u2014 beginning at the steps of Hovde Hall and ending at the Purdue Memorial Union lawn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"876\" height=\"493\" src=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/pdog-chiangrun.jpg\" alt=\"Purdue President Mung Chiang running on campus with students\" class=\"wp-image-14963\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/pdog-chiangrun.jpg 876w, https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/pdog-chiangrun-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/pdog-chiangrun-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 876px) 100vw, 876px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Purdue Day of Giving celebrations included a run with Purdue President Mung Chiang. (Purdue for Life Foundation photo\/Michael Fairchild)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>New this year, a gift from Jeannie (BS pharmacy \u201961) and Jim Chaney allowed two students to each earn a $10,000 scholarship during the Purdue Day of Giving After Dark student event. Isabella Bartol, a sophomore nursing student, and Adeesh Mahesh Desai, a master\u2019s student in robotics, were the recipients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s student event took place in the evening inside the C\u00f3rdova Recreational Sports Center, where students were able to experience a night of neon \u2014 complete with glow-in-the-dark games and attractions, free food from Boilermaker favorites, and a one-of-a-kind LED performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the day, students had the opportunity to learn about the university\u2019s next comprehensive campaign, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/campaign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cVictories &amp; Heroes: Your Campaign for Purdue\u201d<\/a> \u2014 a bold initiative to invest in the long-term future of the university. Student leaders handed out flyers outlining the importance of philanthropy and how it impacts students. All gifts made during Purdue Day of Giving counted toward the campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following individuals were announced as the steering committee chairs for \u201cVictories &amp; Heroes\u201d: Purdue trustee Vanessa Castagna (BS psychology, speech and communication \u201971) of Naples, Florida; John (BSIE \u201971, HDR \u201906) and Fran Edwardson of Winnetka, Illinois; and Bill Elmore (BSEE \u201975, MSEE \u201976) of Palo Alto, California.
