{"id":1489,"date":"2023-03-07T18:55:00","date_gmt":"2023-03-07T18:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/?p=1489"},"modified":"2024-06-04T18:58:33","modified_gmt":"2024-06-04T18:58:33","slug":"purdue-engineer-iu-cardiologist-collaborate-to-offer-innovative-tool-and-fresh-hope-for-babies-with-heart-defects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/2023\/Q1\/purdue-engineer-iu-cardiologist-collaborate-to-offer-innovative-tool-and-fresh-hope-for-babies-with-heart-defects","title":{"rendered":"Purdue engineer, IU cardiologist collaborate to offer innovative tool and fresh hope for babies with heart defects"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"purdue-initial-words-wrap\"><p class=\"purdue-initial-words wp-block-paragraph\">WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. &mdash;<\/p> \n<p>When he was a medical student, none of Mark Payne\u2019s textbooks told him that a cardiologist should consult an engineer before deciding on a patient\u2019s treatment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But today, as a pediatric cardiologist with Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health and professor at IU\u2019s School of Medicine, Payne wouldn\u2019t consider investigating how to make the best use of an echocardiogram to evaluate congenital heart defects without involving engineers from Purdue University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pavlos Vlachos, the St. Vincent Health Professor of Healthcare Engineering and director of the Regenstrief Center for Healthcare Engineering, leads a Purdue team whose recent innovations are on track to be a game-changer for cardiac surgeons and to rewrite cardiology textbooks.
